Snowflake vs Databricks
Compare Snowflake and Databricks by SQL, engineering and model workflows, governance, compute boundaries and free evaluation conditions.
Which buying model fits the workload?
Evaluate Snowflake and Databricks through an end-to-end data job, not a claim that one is only SQL and the other only notebooks. Snowflake separates managed storage, compute and services; Databricks combines data engineering, SQL and machine learning workflows across deployment choices. Test the work your team will own: ingest, transform, govern, query, monitor and recover. Compare complete commercial scope after introductory credits.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | Snowflake | Databricks |
|---|---|---|
| Platform model | Managed data platform with storage, compute and services | Data and AI platform with serverless and classic deployment choices |
| SQL work | Virtual warehouses and supported analytical services | SQL warehouses alongside engineering and model workflows |
| Programming scope | Snowpark and other supported execution paths | Notebooks, pipelines and machine learning tooling |
| Governance | Platform access and catalog capabilities | Unity Catalog governance context |
| Free access | Standard time-limited AI Data Cloud credit trial | Restricted Free Edition plus a separate commercial trial |
| Compute estimate | Warehouse and other service-specific consumption | Workload DBUs and applicable infrastructure charges |
| Migration scope | SQL, pipelines, data models and dependent services | Jobs, data formats, permissions and dependent cloud resources |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | Proof to collect | Acceptance condition |
|---|---|---|
| Pipeline result | A versioned input dataset and reconciled output | Both evaluations produce the required business result |
| Permissions | An access matrix covering engineers, analysts and service identities | Unauthorised access is rejected in the proposed design |
| Cost ownership | Usage mapped to jobs, warehouses and infrastructure | A named owner can investigate unexpected consumption |
| Recovery | A failed load and a documented rerun procedure | The workflow recovers without duplicating business records |
SQL reporting estate
Can the team maintain freshness while serving concurrent reports?
Snowflake: Scope loading, transformations and the chosen warehouse behaviour.
Databricks: Scope ingestion jobs, SQL warehouse and governance dependencies.
Use the same report definitions and refresh requirement without asserting a benchmark winner.
Model development pipeline
Can an experiment become an owned scheduled workflow?
Snowflake: Map the supported programming and deployment path for the intended model.
Databricks: Map notebooks, jobs, model governance and execution resources.
Count the work needed to reproduce a run and assign an incident owner.
Separate departmental budgets
Can compute ownership be traced to a business workload?
Snowflake: Design warehouse and service usage attribution for the departments.
Databricks: Design job, warehouse and infrastructure usage attribution.
A platform-wide monthly total cannot show whether each department meets its budget.
Learning environment
Does the free route cover the evaluation without production assumptions?
Snowflake: Plan around the standard trial credit and 30-day boundary.
Databricks: Evaluate Free Edition limits separately from the 14-day commercial trial.
Keep personal learning data separate from a production access and reliability requirement.
Follow one dataset all the way to a decision
Choose a dataset with a real reporting or model requirement and follow its lifecycle: capture, validation, transformation, permission changes, consumption and eventual removal. A tool can look attractive in one editor while leaving important handoffs outside the proposed solution.
Require the evaluator to state which features are included in the selected tier and which services or cloud resources are separately purchased. Avoid a false choice between SQL and engineering: both platforms span multiple work types, and the relevant question is how the intended team will deliver its own workload.
Draw the billable boundary around each execution path
A query, scheduled transformation and model job need not share the same cost behaviour. Write the execution path for each important task, including idle resources and storage retained between runs. Attribute costs to an accountable workload rather than distributing a platform total evenly across users.
Keep free access separate from operational acceptance. Databricks Free Edition has fair-use limits and no production reliability SLA, while a Snowflake trial has a finite usage balance. A useful evaluation records what changes in permissions, capacity, support and billing when the team adopts the paid deployment.
Questions before you choose
Is Snowflake only a SQL warehouse?
No. Its scope includes programming through Snowpark and additional data and AI capabilities. Identify the actual execution services needed for the workload.
Is Databricks only for machine learning?
No. It supports data engineering and SQL analytics as well as model workflows. This comparison evaluates the required delivery process rather than assigning each platform a single use.
Is Databricks Free Edition a production SLA?
No. The official limitations describe fair-use quotas and no guaranteed reliability, support or service-level agreement.
Do trial credits include every cloud bill?
Do not assume so. The signup route, deployment and underlying infrastructure determine which charges are covered. Review the trial and paid architecture separately.
Turn the comparison into your own evaluation
Use the same criteria and priorities for both products, keep unknowns unassessed and record the plan and evidence behind your ratings.
Build a Snowflake vs Databricks scorecard →Keep the assumptions with the figures
Use the date, billing cycle, units and limits with each example. Check current account terms before purchasing. Unverified prices and model costs stay unpriced.
