How to choose web hosting
Start with the website you need to operate. A general web hosting bundle, managed WordPress service and managed cloud server have different responsibilities and cost units. Use the same site, email requirement and recovery needs for every quote.
Questions to ask before you buy
- What application, number of websites and resource limits does the plan support?
- Are mailboxes, staging, backup restores and migration included?
- What is due upfront, what renews later and which extras are billed separately?
Put your shortlist to the test
Before a move, inventory files, databases, domains, mailboxes and scheduled jobs. In an authorised test environment, check a form submission, a mobile page, a backup restore and an important redirect. Agree a migration window and rollback owner before changing production DNS.
Compare the service you will actually operate
These are starting routes through the shortlist, rather than performance rankings. A provider can sell several product families; confirm the selected package.
Record the whole first term and the renewal
Keep the billing currency, tax treatment, contract length, total payable now and renewal rate together. A monthly equivalent for a prepaid term is different from paying month by month. Add domain renewal, required mailboxes, backup storage and any support or security options to the same brief.
For example, a fictional business needs two websites and four mailboxes. A plan that fits two sites still needs a separate email check. Record the four mailbox entitlements and their renewal terms before marking the quote complete. A free domain year or introductory email offer should not be carried forward as a permanent zero-cost line.
Make the migration scope explicit
List what moves and what stays: website files, database, domain registration, DNS, email and external storage. Define how a customer enquiry reaches its inbox after the move. For an online store, also agree how orders created during cutover are preserved. Keep an approved rollback plan and test recovery on a non-production copy.
A website transfer does not by itself establish that historical mail, DNS records or every external integration has moved. Use the CMS migration checklist for content and URL continuity and the comparison scorecard to retain your requirements.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between web hosting and a website builder?
Hosting runs or serves your website. A website builder supplies an editing and publishing system, often bundled with hosting. Compare the actual application, export options and included hosting package.
Does web hosting always include business email?
No. Mailboxes can be included, introductory, sold as an add-on or supplied by a separate provider. Check account count, storage and renewal terms for the actual hosting plan.
Is managed WordPress hosting the same as a general cloud server?
No. A managed WordPress service is organised around running WordPress. A cloud server has its own resource and administration scope. Confirm supported applications and which maintenance tasks belong to the provider.
Is an advertised monthly hosting price paid monthly?
Not necessarily. It can be a monthly equivalent for an annual or multi-year prepaid term. Check the total due now, contract length, billing currency, taxes and renewal rate.
Does a website migration also move email?
Do not assume it does. Agree the scope for website files, databases, DNS and historical mail separately. Test forms and mail delivery before completing the cutover.
