RustDesk vs Chrome Remote Desktop
Choose between self-hostable remote-access infrastructure and Google’s configured-computer connection workflow, including the operating responsibilities.
Do you need to operate the connection infrastructure?
RustDesk deserves a closer look when running the ID and relay infrastructure is part of the requirement and somebody can maintain it. Chrome Remote Desktop fits a simpler Google-based access or temporary-support workflow when account policy permits it. RustDesk Server OSS is free software; Server Pro adds paid administration. The choice is about ownership and access requirements, not a measured speed winner.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | RustDesk | Chrome Remote Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Connection model | Client with self-hostable ID and relay services | Google remote-access and support service |
| Infrastructure ownership | Your team operates self-hosted servers | Google provides the service; you configure the host computer |
| Free access | AGPL client and Server OSS | No separate paid subscription advertised |
| Paid management | Server Pro adds commercial administration and identity features | Do not infer a separate enterprise technician suite from the service |
| Host setup | Configure clients for the chosen server and encryption key | Install the host component and configure remote access |
| Temporary assistance | Evaluate the proposed client and consent workflow | Temporary support-code workflow |
| Continuing work | Server updates, monitoring and recovery | Host access, account policy and permission maintenance |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | Evidence to collect | Acceptance condition |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | A list of host, relay and account administrators | Every operational dependency has a named owner |
| Connection setup | One controlled machine and a second authorised device | The intended user can connect and end access |
| Revocation | A removed host or revoked test account | Access ends through the documented administrative procedure |
| Running cost | Infrastructure, traffic and administrator time where applicable | The free-software option has an explicit operating budget |
A technical team controls relays
Who owns the connection servers and their updates?
RustDesk: Prepare a self-hosted ID and relay deployment with a named operator.
Chrome Remote Desktop: Check whether a Google-provided service meets the stated requirement.
Self-hosting is a deployment choice; it does not by itself establish compliance.
Occasional family or colleague help
Can the person receiving help understand the consent process?
RustDesk: Rehearse installing the client and approving the intended assistance.
Chrome Remote Desktop: Rehearse generating and using a temporary support code.
Use test computers and end the connection deliberately after the exercise.
Central identity is mandatory
Can access follow the organisation’s identity lifecycle?
RustDesk: Evaluate the relevant Server Pro identity integration and plan.
Chrome Remote Desktop: Check the Google account and organisational policy that govern access.
A free client download is not proof of centralised identity administration.
The server must be rebuilt
Can the team restore connection service after losing a host?
RustDesk: Document server state, keys, backups and client configuration dependencies.
Chrome Remote Desktop: Document host reinstallation and account recovery for the configured computer.
Record the recovery procedure before placing the workflow into routine use.
Define what self-hosting must achieve
Start with a concrete requirement: operating the relay, controlling server configuration or integrating an existing identity provider. Avoid using “self-hosted” as a substitute for a security review. The organisation still needs a policy for who can connect, how hosts are approved and which actions are permitted.
For RustDesk, include network reachability, client configuration and updates in the pilot brief. Decide whether Server OSS meets the workflow or whether the Pro console and controls are needed. For Chrome Remote Desktop, verify the Google-based setup and host permissions on an actual managed computer rather than a personal exception.
Make the second operator able to recover access
Ask someone other than the original installer to follow the proposed runbook. They should be able to identify the configured host, locate the owner of the access account and revoke a test connection. For a self-hosted deployment, add the server rebuild and client configuration steps.
Keep the test narrow and authorised. A connection to one Windows computer does not establish identical behaviour on Linux, macOS or a mobile device. Record the exact platform, permissions and deployment edition beside the result so a later rollout does not inherit an unsupported assumption.
Questions before you choose
Is RustDesk Server Pro open source and free?
No. The client and Server OSS are AGPL community software. Server Pro is a separate commercial, proprietary server offering.
Does free self-hosting mean no cost?
No. Hosting, network traffic, patching and administration still need resources even when the software licence is free.
Does Chrome Remote Desktop require host setup?
Yes. Set up the computer to be accessed and grant the required operating-system permissions. The temporary-support workflow is a separate way to share access.
Which is more secure?
That depends on the deployment, account controls and operating process. This comparison does not provide a security audit or a universal security ranking.
