Google Search Console vs Semrush

Use owned-property Google Search evidence and external research for the different questions they answer.

START WITH YOUR BUYING BRIEF

Do you need first-party search evidence, external research or both?

Use Google Search Console to investigate Google Search performance and indexing for a property you can access. Evaluate Semrush for competitor, keyword, backlink and technical research beyond that owned-property reporting. They can work together: Search Console helps establish what Google reports for your site, while Semrush adds external research and optional AI visibility observations. Their numbers are not interchangeable measures of actual visits.

A new page is missing

Has Google discovered and indexed the intended URL?

Google Search Console: Inspect the URL, canonical selection and indexing information.

Semrush: Use an audit to find technical or internal-link issues that merit investigation.

Hypothetical brief: repair a verified issue, then use the relevant Google workflow; neither tool can guarantee inclusion.

A new content topic

Which customer question deserves a useful page?

Google Search Console: Review available queries and pages already receiving impressions.

Semrush: Research additional terms, result pages and competing coverage.

An owned-site report can reveal existing demand without representing every topic the site could cover.

Traffic reconciliation

Why do research estimates differ from the site’s own reports?

Google Search Console: Keep Google impressions and clicks within their reporting definitions.

Semrush: Treat external traffic and visibility figures as estimates for the stated scope.

Do not replace measured clicks with an external estimate or assume either is the same as analytics sessions.

AI search brief

Where and how is the brand observed in AI answers?

Google Search Console: Use Search Console for its supported Google Search reporting questions.

Semrush: Define monitored prompts, platforms, market and observation frequency.

A prompt observation, a citation and a referral visit are separate signals; do not merge them into an invented total.

Keep different search measures separate

A click reported by Google, a session in an analytics service and an estimated competitor visit are different observations. Record the definition, period and scope beside each report before using the figures to judge a change. Disagreement is a reason to investigate rather than silently choosing the largest number.

For your own site, begin with the accessible first-party reports, then use external research to widen the questions. The practical advantage of a combined workflow is context: it can connect an observed search issue with a prioritised task without pretending that the two systems measure the same universe.

Separate technical investigation from Google’s indexing decision

An audit may reveal a broken link, a blocked path or an inconsistent canonical. URL inspection can add Google’s view of a specific URL. Write down the observed issue and the proposed change, then verify the corrected page and request discovery through an appropriate supported workflow.

A submitted sitemap or a successful live inspection is not a promise that a URL will be indexed. Keep submission receipts separate from confirmed index status. A useful search process records what was fixed, what was submitted and what Google later reports.

Questions before you choose

Do I need Semrush to use Google Search Console?

No. Search Console is a free Google service for properties you can verify or have permission to access. Semrush is a separate product.

Can Google Search Console research any competitor?

It is scoped to properties for which you have access. It is not a general competitor keyword or backlink database.

Can Semrush force a page into Google’s index?

No. Technical research can help diagnose issues, but Google decides whether to index a URL. Submitting a sitemap or requesting indexing does not guarantee inclusion.

Should Semrush estimates match Search Console clicks?

Do not expect equality. External estimates and property-specific Google Search clicks have different methods and scope. Use each for its stated question.

Turn the comparison into your own evaluation

Use the same criteria and priorities for both products, keep unknowns unassessed and record the plan and evidence behind your ratings.

Keep the assumptions with the figures

Use the date, billing cycle, units and limits with each example. Check current account terms before purchasing. Unverified prices and model costs stay unpriced.
