Semrush vs Ahrefs
Compare research tasks, tracked sites and AI visibility coverage before choosing a search toolkit.
Which research brief needs a paid tool?
Both Semrush and Ahrefs cover keyword, competitor, backlink and technical-site work. Compare a representative set of tasks in your target market, then price the users, websites, tracking and history needed. Semrush packages SEO with optional broader AI search capabilities; Ahrefs includes multiple search tools and a separate Brand Radar offer. A third-party visibility estimate is not a guarantee of traffic or citations.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | Semrush | Ahrefs |
|---|---|---|
| Core research | Keywords, competitors, links and technical health | Keywords, competitors, links and technical health |
| Current packaging | SEO, SEO + AI Search and additional toolsets | Paid search plans plus separately scoped products |
| Recurring free access | Limited Free account and demo project | Limited owned-site access through Ahrefs Free |
| Owned-site verification | First-party integrations can add context | Ahrefs Free requires verified websites |
| AI monitoring | Specify prompts, platforms, domains and plan | Specify included checks versus separate Brand Radar scope |
| Capacity questions | Websites, tracked terms, users and add-ons | Crawl, history, exports, tracked terms and users |
| Success evidence | Useful decisions validated against owned-site results | Useful decisions validated against owned-site results |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | Evidence to collect | Acceptance condition |
|---|---|---|
| Market coverage | A shared set of terms, domains and example URLs | Outputs support the defined research decisions |
| Technical usefulness | Reproducible issues and a prioritised backlog | The responsible engineer can verify the diagnosis |
| Capacity and access | Sites, users, crawl, tracking and export forecast | The quoted plan covers the realistic workload |
| Outcome review | First-party observations and an action record | Research is connected to work and measured outcomes |
UK content plan
Can the team identify and prioritise useful customer questions?
Semrush: Research the agreed terms and market using a consistent brief.
Ahrefs: Research the same terms and market.
Hypothetical brief: inspect underlying result pages rather than sorting only by a difficulty number.
Technical backlog
Can the audit produce issues an engineer can reproduce?
Semrush: Run a scoped site audit and inspect example URLs.
Ahrefs: Run the same scope and inspect example URLs.
The acceptance condition is an actionable diagnosis, not the largest issue count.
AI visibility review
What exact observations support a reported mention?
Semrush: Record the monitored prompts, platform and capture time.
Ahrefs: Record equivalent coverage and the relevant Brand Radar entitlement.
An unobserved mention is not proof of absence across every user, model or location.
Agency workload
Can several people work across the client portfolio?
Semrush: Cost the required users, websites, reports and optional toolsets.
Ahrefs: Cost users, projects, history, exports and enabled usage charges.
Use named responsibilities and a realistic reporting month rather than one person sharing a login.
Test the research against your market
Prepare a small set of actual customer questions, competitor domains and technical problems. Review which outputs help a writer, analyst or engineer make a decision. The useful comparison is the evidence behind a task, not an unsupported claim that one vendor has the universally best database.
Where possible, compare external estimates with Search Console and analytics for your own site. Keep differences visible. A vendor can be useful for direction and prioritisation without its traffic estimate being treated as a measured visit count.
Give AI visibility its own measurement brief
Name the platforms, markets, prompts and observation frequency needed. Separate a broad research database from repeated monitoring of your selected questions. Record whether the service reports a brand mention, a citation, a linked page or another signal.
Keep AI visibility and referral traffic as different measures. A mention may have no click, and a referral may not reveal the exact prompt. Evaluate both while avoiding an invented conversion rate between them or a promise that buying a monitoring tool will produce recommendations.
Questions before you choose
Are Semrush and Ahrefs free?
Both offer limited recurring free access. Semrush advertises a constrained Free account; Ahrefs Free focuses on verified owned sites. Neither is unrestricted access to its full paid suite.
Are the old Semrush Pro and Guru names current here?
The current public SEO + AI Search page lists SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced. Existing account terms may differ, so match the actual offer.
Does Ahrefs Free research every competitor?
No. Its limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access is for verified websites. Broader competitor research belongs in the paid-scope evaluation.
Will either tool guarantee AI citations or rankings?
No. These products help investigate and monitor search activity. Search engines and AI services decide what they show, and a reported observation covers only the measured scope.
Turn the comparison into your own evaluation
Use the same criteria and priorities for both products, keep unknowns unassessed and record the plan and evidence behind your ratings.

Use the date, billing cycle, units and limits with each example. Check current account terms before purchasing. Unverified prices and model costs stay unpriced.
