LibreOffice vs Apache OpenOffice
Compare LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice through document round trips, Apple silicon deployment, Java dependencies and support ownership.
Which workflow fits your requirements?
Both suites provide no-subscription desktop office tools with OpenDocument workflows. LibreOffice deserves evaluation when its current platform support and partner enterprise support options meet the migration brief. Apache OpenOffice can be assessed against an established local-document workflow, with particular attention to output formats and its published Apple silicon emulation requirement. Use representative files and explicit acceptance criteria rather than treating a shared project history as proof of identical capability.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | LibreOffice | Apache OpenOffice |
|---|---|---|
| Licence access | Free, open-source community suite | Free, open-source suite |
| Main applications | Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base and Math | Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base and Math |
| Desktop platforms | Supported Windows, macOS and Linux | Windows, macOS and Linux requirements published |
| Apple silicon | Native Apple silicon option in current requirements | Intel build through Rosetta 2 in published requirements |
| Document workflow | OpenDocument and supported import/export formats | OpenDocument and supported import/export formats |
| Dependencies | Some functions, notably Base, require Java | Some functions require a Java runtime |
| Support scope | Community help; partner enterprise products and SLAs separate | Community resources; separately arranged deployment and support |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | Evidence to collect | Acceptance condition |
|---|---|---|
| Critical task | Repeatable steps using the intended device and account | The agreed output or handover is completed |
| Device coverage | Supported operating systems and lifecycle owner | Every required device has a supported route |
| Account boundary | User, administrator and optional-service entitlements | The buyer knows what is included and separately paid |
| Recovery and support | A documented exception, update and recovery process | A named owner can resolve a failed workflow |
Mac replacement cycle
Must the office suite run natively on Apple silicon?
LibreOffice: Check the supported Apple silicon build and required functions.
Apache OpenOffice: Assess the published Rosetta 2 requirement against IT policy.
Make architecture support an explicit requirement before comparing the interface.
Client Word document
Can the recipient reopen an editable file with the required structure?
LibreOffice: Test import, edit, export and reopen using the agreed output format.
Apache OpenOffice: Check the exact supported export format before the same round trip.
Opening a file and saving it back to the same modern format are different capabilities.
Department spreadsheet
Will calculations and automation retain their meaning?
LibreOffice: Reconcile a representative workbook, including important formulas and macros.
Apache OpenOffice: Reconcile the same workbook and document unsupported automation.
A displayed total alone does not establish that recalculation and automation behave correctly.
Supported organisation rollout
Who owns a failed upgrade during a deadline?
LibreOffice: Scope community use versus a partner enterprise product and support agreement.
Apache OpenOffice: Define internal ownership and any separately arranged support.
Require response expectations, escalation and rollback instructions in writing.
Specify the file exchange before selecting a suite
Create a small but demanding file set: a contract with tracked changes, a budget with formulas and a presentation using the organisation’s fonts. Preserve an untouched copy. Define which information and layout must survive editing and which output formats the recipient requires.
Test opening, editing, saving and reopening as separate steps. Ask a recipient using the target application to review the result. A PDF may be suitable for a final fixed document, but it cannot substitute for an editable spreadsheet or a required tracked-change handover. These are proposed migration checks, not completed compatibility results.
A free licence still needs a migration plan
Inventory the templates, fonts, macros, external data links and Java-dependent functions people use. These dependencies determine training and deployment work more accurately than the number of desktops alone. Include a route for users to flag exceptions before removing their existing editing tools.
For LibreOffice, distinguish the community download from an enterprise product and support supplied by an ecosystem partner. For OpenOffice, document the proposed platform support and internal or external escalation path. In either case, cost the conversion, training and continuing maintenance work separately from the licence fee.
Questions before you choose
Are both suites free for business use?
The community suites are free to use. Optional migration, support and partner products are separate commercial decisions.
Are LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice the same product?
No. They are separate projects. Evaluate their current builds, platform requirements and the exact features your files require.
Is Apache OpenOffice native on Apple silicon?
The published OpenOffice macOS requirements describe an Intel processor build emulated through Rosetta 2 on ARM processors.
Does opening DOCX guarantee an unchanged DOCX round trip?
No. Verify import and export separately, then review the edited file in the recipient’s application. Do not assume identical format support between the suites.
Turn the comparison into your own evaluation
Use the same criteria and priorities for both products, keep unknowns unassessed and record the plan and evidence behind your ratings.
