Keeper vs NordPass:
what survives the free trial?
Compare Keeper and NordPass for restricted free access, multi-device use, shared folders and the business controls needed for employee handovers.
Choose around the work.
Check the retained plan.
For a continuing free vault, compare the restriction carefully: Keeper’s fallback is limited to 10 records on the same mobile device, while NordPass Free permits one active device session. Neither should be treated as a free team-sharing plan. For normal multi-device sharing or a workforce rollout, assess the appropriate paid edition and practise a group-access change before deciding.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | Keeper | NordPass |
|---|---|---|
| Free access model | Restricted fallback on the same mobile device after a personal trial | Continuing basic account with one active device session |
| Free vault restriction | Up to 10 records; no web vault or extension | Basic storage and filling; concurrent use requires paid access |
| Free sync and sharing | No sync or sharing in Free | Premium adds concurrent sessions and sharing features |
| Paid device workflow | Paid vault synchronisation and sharing | Paid simultaneous sessions across devices |
| Team organisation | Business shared folders and delegated administration | Business groups and Shared Folders managed in the Admin Panel |
| Advanced provisioning | Enterprise adds SCIM, directory and SSO integrations | Review Business versus Enterprise identity and provisioning scope |
| Wider purchase boundary | Vault, storage, secrets management and PAM need a scoped quote | Personal bundles and organisational plans are different purchases |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Brief | Keeper configuration | NordPass configuration | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|---|
| After-trial use | Mobile fallback with record count | Free account with session restriction | Retained features and access conditions |
| Phone-to-laptop transition | Paid sync on both devices | Free versus paid session pattern | Login prompts and updated record visibility |
| Department credential sharing | Business shared folders | Business Groups and Shared Folders | Access matrix checked by normal users |
| Contractor departure | Quoted administration and integration | Quoted roles and group changes | Revocation and external rotation record |
A light mobile user wants to avoid renewal
What remains usable after the trial ends?
Keeper: Check the same-device fallback against the 10-record ceiling.
NordPass: Check the continuing Free account with its single active session.
Make a synthetic inventory before the trial. Count the records and devices needed on an ordinary day; do not test only the richer trial state.
A person switches between phone and laptop
Does a session change interrupt the normal working sequence?
Keeper: Use the proposed paid vault plan on both devices.
NordPass: Compare Free session switching with paid concurrent access.
Perform one task on the laptop, move to the phone and return. Record reauthentication and any missing record update in that exact sequence.
A department shares supplier accounts
Can a group receive updates without exposing unrelated items?
Keeper: Map Business shared folders to the department and its administrators.
NordPass: Map business Groups to the intended Shared Folders.
Start with three synthetic records and two groups. One record must remain private to a single group; check the result as an ordinary user.
IT removes a contractor
Which access is revoked and which credentials must be rotated?
Keeper: Demonstrate the proposed business administration and enterprise integration scope.
NordPass: Demonstrate the quoted Admin Panel roles and group-removal process.
Keep the external service owner in the exercise. Record group changes, the supplier-password rotation and any retained offline or copied information as separate concerns.
Evaluate the plan you will keep, not only the trial
A trial can make a restricted free product appear to satisfy a much wider requirement. Create a list of the items and devices that must remain available after the evaluation period, then ask the vendor to show the retained state. Keep this list separate from a wishlist of useful extras. The purchase decision should be based on a normal month after the offer ends.
Device restrictions also create support work. A person who changes between a phone and a laptop may accept a sign-in prompt once but find it disruptive across a working day. Use a short sequence that reflects that day, including a restart and a second account. Document the interruption without turning a single observation into a general reliability claim.
A shared folder needs an owner and a departure procedure
Design the group structure before importing a large credential library. Each folder should have a named owner, a reason for membership and a procedure for reviewing access. A department name alone is not enough when contractors, temporary cover and administrators need different rights. Use a small access matrix to make those differences visible in both demonstrations.
The password manager is only one part of a departure procedure. A user may already know a shared password, so the external account owner must decide when to rotate it and how to confirm the change. Compare the quoted administration tools against that procedure and price any required identity integrations separately. An impressive platform overview does not establish the contents of a specific password-manager licence.
Questions before you choose
Does Keeper have a free version?
Yes, but its documented post-trial Free version is narrow: the same mobile device, up to 10 records, and no sync, sharing, extension or web-vault access.
Does NordPass Free work on several devices at once?
No. It permits one active device session. Installation and synchronised data on other devices should not be confused with simultaneous signed-in access.
Can either free plan replace a team password manager?
These personal free offers do not establish the group-sharing and administrative controls needed for a workforce rollout. Evaluate the appropriate business package with a small access matrix.
Are Keeper PAM and NordPass personal bundles comparable to a business vault seat?
They have different scopes. Compare the specific workload, retained edition and written entitlement list. Separate wider privileged-access services or consumer bundles from the business-vault quote.
Turn the comparison into your own evaluation
Use the same criteria and priorities for both products, keep unknowns unassessed and record the plan and evidence behind your ratings.
