Gumroad vs Payhip:
direct sales, marketplace fees and tax handling
Compare Gumroad and Payhip for digital products by sales channel, per-order fees, payout route and the stated scope of sales-tax handling.
Match the operating model.
Cost the complete workflow.
Gumroad centres a no-monthly-fee creator offer with separate direct and Discover fees, and a merchant-of-record model. Payhip offers a free store and paid fee-reduction packages, with specified digital VAT and sales-tax responsibilities. Choose after tracing the exact buyer channel, payment and refund; tax-handling labels and headline percentages alone do not describe the same transaction.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | Gumroad | Payhip |
|---|---|---|
| Direct-sale platform fees | Headline 10% plus US$0.50; processing additional | 5%, 2% or 0% according to package; gateway fees additional |
| Monthly platform bill | No monthly subscription | US$0 Free, US$29 Plus or US$99 Pro |
| Marketplace acquisition | Discover sales have a flat 30% fee including processing | Cost the intended store and acquisition channel separately |
| High-volume boundary | Direct-sale percentage falls after a stated monthly paid-sales threshold | Paid packages reduce the platform percentage without an advertised revenue cap |
| Tax model | Merchant of record for sales tax within its applicable obligations | Digital EU/UK VAT reseller and US/Canadian sales-tax handling; other tax settings remit to the seller |
| Creator products | Downloads, courses and memberships | Downloads, courses, coaching, memberships and physical products |
| Payment acceptance task | Confirm the account’s eligible payout route and timing | Confirm supported gateway, settlement and refund handling |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Buying brief | Gumroad | Payhip |
|---|---|---|
| A creator sells a US$10 downloadable guide | Headline platform fee is US$1.50 on a direct sale. | Free platform fee is US$0.50 on that sale. |
| A buyer arrives through a marketplace recommendation | Discover uses its separate 30% fee. | Identify the actual route and its costs rather than assuming a comparable marketplace purchase. |
| A seller has customers in several tax jurisdictions | Inspect the merchant-of-record invoice and account terms. | Check the documented tax-handling scope and any merchant-configured taxes. |
| An established creator needs predictable operations | Reconcile the fee breakdown, payout and refunded access. | Reconcile the gateway refund and download or membership access. |

What is left before processing and tax?
Gumroad: Headline platform fee is US$1.50 on a direct sale.
Payhip: Free platform fee is US$0.50 on that sale.
Illustrative platform fees only: processing, tax, currency, refund and any special rate are excluded.

Does the direct-link rate still apply?
Gumroad: Discover uses its separate 30% fee.
Payhip: Identify the actual route and its costs rather than assuming a comparable marketplace purchase.
Attribute the sales channel in reporting; a creator-owned link and marketplace-acquired buyer are different acquisition models.
A seller has customers in several tax jurisdictions
Who collects and remits each transaction tax?
Gumroad: Inspect the merchant-of-record invoice and account terms.
Payhip: Check the documented tax-handling scope and any merchant-configured taxes.
Create a country-by-product-type matrix and review it with the business’s adviser; the platform does not remove unrelated business obligations.
An established creator needs predictable operations
What happens after a refund or access complaint?
Gumroad: Reconcile the fee breakdown, payout and refunded access.
Payhip: Reconcile the gateway refund and download or membership access.
Use a permitted test transaction and sample export; do not assume that reversing a payment closes every access or accounting task.
Compare one transaction before comparing a month
Choose the actual product price and anticipated payment method, and calculate a direct sale first. Gumroad’s help article states that its headline direct-sale charge excludes card processing or PayPal charges; Discover has a separate processing-inclusive rate. Its current help page also describes an automatic reduction in the direct-sale percentage after US$20,000 of paid sales in a calendar month. Apply that rule only to the qualifying later sales, and confirm any custom account fee before using it in a model.
For Payhip, put each monthly package on a separate line and apply its platform percentage to the same assumed sales base. Add the chosen gateway’s quote to all three. Then repeat the model for low-priced products, bundles and a quiet month, because Gumroad’s fixed per-order component and Payhip’s subscription can affect those baskets differently. Record the assumptions clearly; a worked fee example does not prove a vendor will produce more customers or higher net revenue.
Trace the invoice, remittance and customer remedy
Draw the commercial chain from buyer checkout to the money received by the creator. Gumroad identifies itself as merchant of record. Payhip describes acting as a reseller for digital EU/UK VAT, and as a marketplace facilitator or digital platform operator for US/Canadian sales tax, while other configured taxes are paid to the seller for reporting and remittance. Those descriptions have different scope, so inspect the applicable product type and destination rather than reducing both to “tax included”.
Ask for the documents needed by the person doing the accounts: a representative buyer invoice, fee statement, payout record and refund entry. Check settlement currency, payout eligibility and the handling of a partial refund. For a membership, add cancellation and access expiry to that checklist. The vendor’s transaction-tax role does not establish the creator’s treatment of income, company accounts or every other obligation; take unresolved points to the business’s adviser with the actual contract and sample records.
Questions before you choose
Does no monthly fee make Gumroad free to sell through?
No. Sales incur direct or Discover fees. Gumroad’s fee documentation also separates payment processing from the headline direct-sale charge.
Is Payhip tax handling restricted to digital EU/UK VAT?
Its current feature page also describes responsibility for US and Canadian sales tax. Other configured taxes can be collected and passed to the seller for reporting and payment.
Can I use the 30% Discover rate for every Gumroad sale?
No. It applies to qualifying marketplace discovery sales. Profile and direct-link sales have a different fee arrangement, with a stated high-volume rule.
Does the fee example include UK VAT and currency conversion?
No. The US$10 example isolates the published platform fee. A UK business must add the applicable processing, tax and currency effects for its actual transaction.
