Fivetran vs Airbyte
Compare Fivetran and Airbyte for managed ingestion, self-managed control, connector behaviour, schema changes and the usage units behind a data pipeline.
Which pipeline approach fits?
Shortlist Fivetran when its managed connections and supported sync behaviour fit the required sources and destinations. Shortlist Airbyte when its connector coverage and chosen Core, cloud or hybrid arrangement fit the same pipeline. Define the exact connector before comparing catalogue size. Monthly active rows, volume credits and Data Worker capacity are different charging models, and none includes every downstream warehouse cost.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | Fivetran | Airbyte |
|---|---|---|
| Product scope | Managed data movement with related transformation and activation services | Replication through Core, managed cloud and hybrid offers |
| Deployment choice | Specify the supported managed service and connection arrangement | Choose self-managed Core or the intended commercial deployment |
| Connector fit | Verify the exact source, destination and sync semantics | Verify the exact connector, maturity and maintenance responsibility |
| Change handling | Confirm updates, deletes and schema behaviour per connection | Confirm incremental or CDC behaviour per connector |
| Free boundary | Free plan has separate connection, activation and model-run limits | Core is self-managed; commercial cloud evaluation differs |
| Pricing units | Connection MAR, activation MAR and transformation model runs | Volume/credits on selected tiers or Data Worker capacity on others |
| Remaining costs | Destination compute, storage and pipeline ownership | Destination costs plus any self-managed runtime and maintenance |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | Proposed exercise | Accept when |
|---|---|---|
| Connector coverage | Copy synthetic records with required custom fields | Every required object and field is accounted for |
| Schema evolution | Add a field and change an approved test type | Destination and downstream behaviour are documented |
| Deletion handling | Delete a synthetic source record | The destination follows the required deletion policy |
| Usage forecast | Add a second destination to the design | Both service usage and destination costs are included |
Daily CRM copy
Will the required CRM fields arrive in the warehouse?
Fivetran: Review the specific connection and destination mapping, including custom fields.
Airbyte: Review the selected connector’s supported fields and destination mapping.
Use a written field inventory; a CRM logo alone does not establish full field or object coverage.
Changed source schema
What happens when a source adds a column or changes a type?
Fivetran: Apply an approved test change and inspect the destination and downstream models.
Airbyte: Perform the same change with the chosen connector and schema policy.
Record whether intervention, a resync or a model change is required before declaring recovery complete.
Deleted record
Does the destination represent deletion in the intended way?
Fivetran: Verify the connector’s delete handling and reconcile the agreed result.
Airbyte: Verify the connector’s delete handling under the actual sync mode.
Define soft deletion, physical deletion and history requirements separately.
Cost growth
What changes when the same source feeds a second destination?
Fivetran: Model the additional connection instance using the current MAR rules.
Airbyte: Model the extra sync using the applicable volume or capacity offer.
Keep destination compute and any resync or operating cost in the forecast.
Evaluate a connection, not a logo list
Write the required objects, fields, source permissions, extraction limits and destination types before selecting a connector. Include an updated record, a deleted record and a schema change. The important result is a reconciled destination under the intended mode, not a successful first connection screen.
For Airbyte Core, assign a person to runtime upgrades and connector maintenance. For a managed service, confirm the support and connector responsibilities in the selected offer. Neither choice eliminates the need to monitor freshness and investigate differences between source and destination.
Keep the charging units separate
Fivetran distinguishes connection MAR from activation MAR and transformation model runs. Its documentation counts separate connection instances separately, including the same source feeding more than one destination. A warehouse’s total row count alone is therefore a poor estimate of the ingestion bill.
Airbyte’s current pricing page separates volume/credit-based Standard and Plus from capacity-based Pro and Enterprise Flex. Core moves infrastructure and operating responsibility to the self-managed deployment. Build the estimate from an actual sync inventory and avoid converting one vendor’s usage unit directly into another’s.
Questions before you choose
Is Airbyte Core the same commercial arrangement as Airbyte Cloud?
No. Core is self-managed. Managed and hybrid offers have separate features, support, operating responsibilities and pricing.
Does Fivetran charge only for the total size of the source database?
No. Its connection pricing uses monthly active rows under its counting rules. Connection instances, changes and plan conditions matter.
Does either subscription include the warehouse bill?
Do not assume that. Include destination compute, storage and related services separately.
