Data engineering software comparison

dbt vs Apache Spark

Compare dbt and Apache Spark for analytics transformations, model dependencies, execution ownership, testing and the boundary between project tooling and processing compute.

START WITH YOUR BUYING BRIEF

Which pipeline approach fits?

dbt organises transformation projects; Spark executes distributed processing. Use dbt when reviewed models, dependencies, tests and documentation fit the supported data platform. Use Spark when its programmable processing APIs fit the workload. They can also work together through a compatible adapter and runtime. Start by identifying the missing layer instead of assuming that a framework and an engine are equivalent replacements.

Reporting model

Can the team review a revenue model and its dependencies?

dbt: Define the model, source references, tests and documentation in the project.

Apache Spark: Implement the transformation and define how dependencies and validation are maintained.

Use synthetic values and a written definition of revenue; passing syntax checks does not validate the business rule.

Unstructured processing

Does the pipeline require custom parsing beyond the modelling layer?

dbt: Identify the supported model/adapter route and any separate preprocessing step.

Apache Spark: Implement the required parsing using supported APIs and libraries.

Do not force an unsupported workload into a framework merely because the rest of the team uses it.

Combined stack

Will the exact adapter and runtime support the required materialisation?

dbt: Check engine version, adapter, authentication and model behaviour together.

Apache Spark: Check the Spark runtime, table format and write behaviour used by the adapter.

A generic Spark compatibility claim is not proof that every model feature works on every distribution.

Failed incremental build

Can the team repair a partial refresh without corrupting a report?

dbt: Review incremental logic, tests and the supported rebuild path.

Apache Spark: Review write/commit behaviour and the application’s recovery steps.

Reconcile row keys, duplicate counts and business totals after the recovery exercise.

Separate the project from the processor

dbt’s project graph and testing workflow solve a different problem from Spark’s execution APIs. A team may need both a governed modelling process and a distributed runtime. Describe what the proposed stack must add: ingestion, model organisation, compute, orchestration or a combination.

When pairing dbt with a Spark-based platform, specify the adapter and supported engine version. Record the actual authentication, table format and required model behaviours. The evaluation is about that combination, not every system carrying the Spark name.

Record the exact dbt offer

dbt’s source engine, packaged distribution, hosted platform and optional services have distinct boundaries. Current upstream development also differentiates the v1 implementation from newer engine work. Keep the version and offer with the evaluation notes rather than applying an old platform feature list to every installation.

A free engine does not include a free data warehouse or Spark cluster. Include the compute used by development, tests, model runs and repairs, plus any scheduler or platform subscription. Record who maintains dependencies and can recover a failed build when the project’s original author is unavailable.

Questions before you choose

Are dbt and Apache Spark direct replacements?

They primarily address different layers: dbt organises transformations and Spark provides execution. Compare the actual missing requirement.

Can dbt work with Spark?

A supported adapter and runtime can connect the layers. Verify the exact versions, authentication and required model behaviours.

Does free dbt software include free warehouse compute?

No. The execution platform and optional commercial services have their own costs.
