DigitalOcean vs Akamai Cloud (Linode)
Compare DigitalOcean and Akamai Cloud by VM ownership, managed deployment options, transfer allowances, backups and current introductory access.
Which buying model fits the workload?
Shortlist DigitalOcean and Akamai Cloud using an application-sized resource plan. DigitalOcean offers Droplets alongside managed application and database products. Akamai Cloud continues the Linode compute platform within a wider cloud portfolio. Compare a VM with a VM, or a defined managed workflow with its counterpart. Plan family, backups, storage and network usage matter more than a provider’s smallest advertised instance.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | DigitalOcean | Akamai Cloud (Linode) |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual-machine model | Droplets with selected CPU and memory resources | Akamai CPU plan families, including shared and dedicated options |
| Container scope | DigitalOcean Kubernetes and App Platform options | Linode Kubernetes Engine and App Platform options |
| Storage scope | Block storage and Spaces object storage | Block and object storage offerings |
| Continuing free access | Limited App Platform static-only tier | No recurring free compute plan claimed |
| Introductory offer | Current first-team $5 signup credit expires after 90 days | Advertised eligible new-customer $100 credit with conditions |
| Transfer review | Check the selected product allowance and overage | Check exact family; G8 and GPU plans differ from older bundles |
| Shutdown behaviour | Inventory resources that continue billing after deployment stops | Powered-off VMs remain allocated and can still be billed |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | Proof to collect | Acceptance condition |
|---|---|---|
| Resource match | CPU family, memory, storage and region for both options | The configurations meet the same workload brief |
| Data protection | An application restore procedure and backup retention | A recoverable copy exists outside the running instance |
| Network budget | Outbound volume, allowance and overage for the exact plan | A traffic increase has a visible cost consequence |
| Cleanup | A list of allocated and retained resources after shutdown | No unwanted recurring resource remains |
Small production VM
Can a named operator restore the application after losing the machine?
DigitalOcean: Include Droplet backups, attached storage and application recovery.
Akamai Cloud (Linode): Include the selected instance backup and storage recovery design.
A virtual machine is not a managed application support agreement.
Static marketing site
Does the project need a runtime or only published files?
DigitalOcean: Check the narrow free static-only App Platform limits.
Akamai Cloud (Linode): Cost the actual publishing and delivery service required.
Do not use static hosting allowances to price a server-rendered application.
Transfer-heavy application
How does the bill change when outbound traffic increases?
DigitalOcean: Use the allowance for the exact DigitalOcean product.
Akamai Cloud (Linode): Use the exact Akamai family and location rather than an older bundled plan.
Compare the same payload and destination pattern; included transfer is not universal.
Short-lived development environment
Which resources must be removed to end ongoing charges?
DigitalOcean: Inventory instances, volumes, snapshots and other retained services.
Akamai Cloud (Linode): Include powered-off allocations and retained storage in the cleanup list.
Propose a resource audit after teardown instead of treating shutdown as deletion.
Decide who operates the application stack
The central question is often whether the team wants infrastructure control or a managed release workflow. Start with the people available to maintain the operating system, runtime and data services. Then compare products with the appropriate responsibility split.
Put backups, alerts and restore ownership on the same page as the VM size. Moving an application onto a small instance may be straightforward, but that purchase alone does not establish who responds to failed updates or inconsistent data.
Use the transfer rules of the selected plan
Transfer assumptions can dominate an apparently simple instance comparison. Record outbound volume, location, destination and any separate product allowance. A bundle from one generation or product family should not be carried into another without checking the current terms.
Remove introductory credits from the steady-state calculation. DigitalOcean’s current standard signup credit is much smaller than older widely repeated promotions, while Akamai credits remain subject to their own eligibility and redemption terms. Neither should decide the production architecture.
Questions before you choose
Is Linode still part of this comparison?
Yes. Akamai Cloud includes the cloud compute services associated with Linode; Cloud Manager access and documentation still use Linode naming in places.
Does DigitalOcean still give every new account $200?
The current official signup-credit documentation states $5 for the first team, expiring after 90 days. Specific partner promotions can have separate conditions.
Are DigitalOcean static sites the same as free Droplets?
No. The limited free App Platform tier covers static-only apps. Droplets are virtual machines with separate charges.
Does powering off an Akamai VM stop its bill?
No. Akamai states that allocated resources remain billable when a VM is powered off. Remove unwanted resources and review retained services to stop their charges.
Turn the comparison into your own evaluation
Use the same criteria and priorities for both products, keep unknowns unassessed and record the plan and evidence behind your ratings.

Use the date, billing cycle, units and limits with each example. Check current account terms before purchasing. Unverified prices and model costs stay unpriced.
