Dify vs Langflow:
managed AI workspaces, Python components and deployment ownership.
Compare Dify and Langflow for document assistants, custom AI components, deployment responsibilities and the costs outside the workflow builder.
Choose the operating model.
Then evaluate the answers.
Dify is a useful shortlist for a managed workspace combining AI workflows and knowledge handling. Langflow is a useful shortlist when developers want Python component control and API or MCP deployment. These are buying directions, not a measured quality ranking. Evaluate the same retrieval task, then price model calls, storage and operations separately from access to the builder.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | Dify | Langflow |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Hosted Cloud workspace or self-hosted Community | Locally installed or self-deployed Python framework |
| Visual work | Workflow Studio with application and knowledge tools | Component flows with a Playground for development |
| Custom logic | Tools, models and integrations around AI workflows | Custom Python components within the flow |
| Application interface | AI application deployment within Dify’s platform | Flows served through API and MCP interfaces |
| Free access boundary | Sandbox has one member, five apps and capacity limits | Free self-hosted software; no verified hosted allowance assumed |
| Licence distinction | Modified Apache-based terms with tenancy and frontend conditions | MIT licence shown in the official repository |
| Production ownership | Cloud manages the platform; self-hosting transfers operation to the team | Deployment, updates and connected services need an operating owner |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Buying brief | Dify | Langflow |
|---|---|---|
| A small team needs a document assistant | Use a Sandbox app with a small approved knowledge set. | Build a retrieval flow and exercise it in the Playground. |
| An engineer needs unusual preprocessing | Prove the required tool or integration before committing the architecture. | Implement the transformation as an isolated Python component. |
| A product exposes AI through an application endpoint | Check the selected app’s API, access and usage allowances. | Define the API or MCP contract for the deployed flow. |
| A team is replacing a retired workflow builder | Recreate the required behaviour rather than assuming a compatible import. | Rebuild the flow with supported components and document custom code. |
A small team needs a document assistant
What does a usable pilot need to include?
Dify: Use a Sandbox app with a small approved knowledge set.
Langflow: Build a retrieval flow and exercise it in the Playground.
Prepare ten questions whose answers are known, including one absent from the documents. Review citations, refusal behaviour and permissions before expansion.
An engineer needs unusual preprocessing
Where will custom transformation logic live?
Dify: Prove the required tool or integration before committing the architecture.
Langflow: Implement the transformation as an isolated Python component.
Use the same malformed and valid samples. Record what must be maintained after the original developer leaves.
A product exposes AI through an application endpoint
Who owns the runtime contract?
Dify: Check the selected app’s API, access and usage allowances.
Langflow: Define the API or MCP contract for the deployed flow.
Specify caller identity, timeout handling and the response returned when a provider is unavailable; a working visual flow does not settle these decisions.
A team is replacing a retired workflow builder
Which parts can actually be migrated?
Dify: Recreate the required behaviour rather than assuming a compatible import.
Langflow: Rebuild the flow with supported components and document custom code.
Inventory prompts, retrieval settings and secrets first. These products are not presented as drop-in replacements for another vendor’s exported flow.
Define an answer contract before choosing a builder
Write an evaluation set using documents the organisation is authorised to use. Include a straightforward fact, a question requiring two passages and a request whose answer is absent. For each, specify whether a response must cite a passage, ask a follow-up question or decline to answer. Keep the model and document version fixed where the products permit it, and record configuration differences rather than interpreting them as a product quality result.
Next check the surrounding workflow. Decide who can upload a replacement document, who approves publication and how an outdated passage is removed. A strong demonstration needs both the intended answer and a correction path. Ask the person who will maintain the assistant to make one controlled content change and explain how they would detect that it affected an answer. These proposed tests establish a buying brief; no result is claimed here.
Put model and operating costs beside the builder
List expected requests, document updates and background indexing separately. An answer can invoke retrieval, embeddings and more than one model step, so one visitor question should not automatically be budgeted as one provider call. Run a small authorised pilot, inspect the actual provider usage and add the associated data-service charges. Do not equate Dify message credits with tokens or with a Langflow flow execution.
For self-hosting, name an owner for patching, database recovery, credential rotation and failed jobs. Compare that workload with the managed platform fee using the same period. Review Dify’s tenancy and frontend conditions for the planned distribution, and retain the relevant licence with the architecture decision. Langflow’s MIT licence does not include free model inference, an operations team or a guarantee about third-party component terms.
Questions before you choose
Does Dify’s free message allowance refill every month?
The Sandbox page lists 200 message credits without a monthly refill promise. Treat them as evaluation access; paid plan credits and bring-your-own provider usage have different terms.
Is Langflow a free managed service in this comparison?
No. This comparison verifies free local or self-hosted software. It does not assign a continuing hosted allowance or assume that hosting and external model services are free.
Can the products use the same model and vector store?
Both support a range of providers, but exact component support and configuration must be checked for the chosen versions. Use the intended provider in a pilot rather than assuming identical behaviour.
Can Dify Community be used commercially?
Its repository licence permits commercial use subject to additional conditions, including multi-tenant and frontend requirements. Check the actual intended use against the current licence or obtain clarification from the supplier.
Turn the comparison into your own evaluation
Use the same criteria and priorities for both products, keep unknowns unassessed and record the plan and evidence behind your ratings.

Use the date, billing cycle, units and limits with each example. Check current account terms before purchasing. Unverified prices and model costs stay unpriced.
