ChatGPT vs Microsoft Copilot:
personal AI, Office access and workplace licences.
Compare ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot around the work, account and plan you would actually keep.
Start with the task.
Then check the account.
ChatGPT and consumer Microsoft Copilot are candidates for everyday assistant work. Copilot deserves a closer look when eligible personal Microsoft 365 app benefits are part of the requirement. A home subscription and Microsoft 365 Copilot for work are separate evaluations: name the account, apps and workplace data before comparing the bill.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | ChatGPT | Microsoft Copilot |
|---|---|---|
| Product in this comparison | ChatGPT assistant | Consumer Microsoft Copilot |
| Daily tasks | Drafting and analysis | Questions, drafting and everyday assistance |
| Free access | Free tier | Free Copilot Chat with lower allowances |
| Paid purchase | Personal or managed workspace plans | Microsoft 365 home offers extend AI access |
| Application context | Define the required output and connection | Eligible personal Office app capabilities depend on subscription |
| Business scope | Choose the required workspace edition | Microsoft 365 Copilot for work is a separate purchase review |
| Budget check | Seats, tools and API consumption | Eligible holder, app entitlement and AI allowances |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Buying brief | Evidence to retain | Decision boundary |
|---|---|---|
| A solo operator already pays for Microsoft 365 | Is another subscription necessary? | Compare incremental recurring cost and task completion rather than the headline package name. |
| A household shares a home subscription | Who receives the intended AI access? | Do not assume a shared office-software benefit means identical AI access for every family member. |
| An employee wants company documents in answers | Is the consumer product the right scope? | No workplace-data entitlement is inferred from free Copilot or a home subscription. |
| A consultant prepares a client deliverable | Does the output survive review in Office? | Check fact retention, layout and the steps needed to make a client-ready document. |
A solo operator already pays for Microsoft 365
Is another subscription necessary?
ChatGPT: Name the assistant tasks that remain unmet and price the retained ChatGPT offer.
Microsoft Copilot: Check the current home subscription’s AI allowances and included applications.
Compare incremental recurring cost and task completion rather than the headline package name.
A household shares a home subscription
Who receives the intended AI access?
ChatGPT: Check which named person would own and use the assistant account.
Microsoft Copilot: Verify which subscription holder receives the relevant AI benefit.
Do not assume a shared office-software benefit means identical AI access for every family member.
An employee wants company documents in answers
Is the consumer product the right scope?
ChatGPT: Ask the employer which managed workspace and connections are approved.
Microsoft Copilot: Evaluate the employer’s Microsoft 365 Copilot arrangement separately from this consumer assistant.
No workplace-data entitlement is inferred from free Copilot or a home subscription.
A consultant prepares a client deliverable
Does the output survive review in Office?
ChatGPT: Request a concise report and open the final file in the intended editor.
Microsoft Copilot: Complete the same brief using the eligible app or consumer Copilot workflow.
Check fact retention, layout and the steps needed to make a client-ready document.
Keep consumer and workplace Copilot distinct
Before a demo, write the exact Microsoft product and account beside the requirement. Consumer Copilot, an eligible Microsoft 365 home benefit and a workplace Copilot deployment can involve different app access and administration. Comparing them as one licence creates a misleading shortlist.
Ask the buyer to identify the real task: drafting in a personal account, revising an Office file or working with employer-managed information. Obtain the appropriate offer for that task before comparing it with a ChatGPT personal or managed workspace account.
Compare the added bill for the retained workflow
If the buyer already pays for office applications, include that existing entitlement in the cost worksheet. Then record any incremental assistant charge and the conditions of the retained offer. Avoid treating a short promotion as the recurring cost.
Use a representative draft and revision request in the actual apps and accounts. Measure the human correction work and check the final file. This approach can reveal a useful purchase without claiming a universal quality winner or assuming all AI activity is unlimited.
Questions before you choose
Is this Microsoft 365 Copilot for work?
No. This comparison covers consumer Microsoft Copilot; employer-managed Microsoft 365 Copilot requires a separate licence and governance review.
Is Microsoft Copilot free?
Free Copilot Chat is available with lower allowances. Paid home subscription benefits have their own conditions.
Can every family member assume the same AI benefit?
Verify the eligible account holder and the specific subscription terms; do not infer identical AI access from general app sharing.
Has SoftwareRadar benchmarked these assistants for this article?
No. The buying briefs are hypothetical acceptance tasks. Run them in the accounts and plans you would retain, and keep the outputs with your own review notes.
Turn the comparison into your own evaluation
Use the same criteria and priorities for both products, keep unknowns unassessed and record the plan and evidence behind your ratings.
