CREATIVE SOFTWARE DECISIONS

AutoCAD vs SketchUp:
DWG drawings, spatial models and design documentation.

Compare AutoCAD and SketchUp for DWG drawings, spatial models and design documentation, including practical evaluation tasks, handoff requirements and licence boundaries.

START WITH YOUR BUYING BRIEF

Choose the deliverable.
Then check the workflow.

AutoCAD is a strong shortlist when precise CAD drawings and structured DWG delivery define the work. SketchUp is relevant when developing and communicating a 3D spatial design is central, with desktop modelling and LayOut available in relevant paid plans. They overlap in design work but are not interchangeable substitutes for every drawing, model or documentation requirement.

A consultant must deliver DWG drawings

What must the recipient be able to edit?

AutoCAD: Prepare the required layers, references, dimensions and plot.

SketchUp: Export an agreed sample from the intended subscription.

Have the receiving CAD contributor check edits and scale; a preview does not establish full drawing fidelity.

An interiors team presents a new room

How will people review the spatial proposal?

AutoCAD: Build the required drawing and any model presentation.

SketchUp: Build an organised spatial model and agreed views.

Use the same room dimensions and requested design change, then review clarity with the project team.

A project needs coordinated drawing sheets

How do model changes reach documents?

AutoCAD: Revise the agreed drawings and issue a new sheet set.

SketchUp: Revise the model and review the linked LayOut documents.

Check dimensions, labels and sheet references rather than assuming that every annotation updates automatically.

A business tries a free web modeller

Is the access appropriate for company work?

AutoCAD: Use a trial or appropriate commercial licence for evaluation.

SketchUp: Check the commercial subscription rather than relying on SketchUp Free.

SketchUp Free is non-commercial; plan and toolset entitlements remain part of acceptance.

Identify the contractual design deliverable

Start by separating drawings from models and presentations. A project may need precise editable CAD sheets, a model for design review, or both. Name each file format, required scale, coordinate convention and document standard. Ask the recipient which items must remain editable. This prevents an attractive model from being accepted as a substitute for a required CAD delivery.

Give both candidate workflows one revision that changes geometry and one that changes documentation. Inspect the issued files independently of the source application. Check line weights, dimensions, fonts, external references and model organisation as applicable. Record the repair work and the responsibilities that remain with another CAD or documentation tool.

Match packages to the actual workstation

SketchUp’s web, iPad and desktop offerings have different scope; LayOut and extensions should be named explicitly in the quote. AutoCAD toolsets and platform availability also need checking. List the operating systems, offline requirements and specialist tools used by each role before comparing annual costs. A generic product name is insufficient to establish that a particular employee can perform the required task.

Include templates, training, extensions and exchange checks in the rollout plan. Keep copies of the accepted sample files with their settings so future contributors can repeat the process. Neither application should be assumed to satisfy a separate BIM requirement solely because it can create a building-shaped model or a CAD drawing. Define that requirement and assess the necessary workflow separately.

Questions before you choose

Is SketchUp a direct AutoCAD replacement?

They overlap in design work, but AutoCAD’s CAD drawing workflow and SketchUp’s spatial modelling emphasis differ. Test the required drawings and model handoff.

Can a business use SketchUp Free?

SketchUp states that Free is not for commercial use. Businesses should evaluate an appropriate paid subscription.

Does every SketchUp plan include LayOut?

No. Check the package; the paid Pro workflow includes desktop modelling and LayOut while web-only access differs.

Does a 3D model prove BIM compliance?

No. Establish the required information, exchange format and project standard, then assess that specific workflow.

Turn the comparison into your own evaluation

Use the same criteria and priorities for both products, keep unknowns unassessed and record the plan and evidence behind your ratings.
