Adobe Premiere vs DaVinci Resolve:
editing, colour finishing and project handoff.
Compare Adobe Premiere and DaVinci Resolve for editing, colour finishing and project handoff, including practical evaluation tasks, handoff requirements and licence boundaries.
Choose the deliverable.
Then check the workflow.
Premiere fits an editing workflow built around Adobe projects and linked creative assets. Resolve puts editing, colour, Fusion effects and Fairlight audio in one application, with free and paid Studio editions. Start with actual camera footage, a delivery specification and the people receiving the project; codec support and finishing handoff can decide the choice before preference for an interface does.

Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Evaluation brief | Adobe Premiere | DaVinci Resolve |
|---|---|---|
| A documentary uses mixed camera formats | Import authorised samples and build a short representative sequence. | Repeat in the intended free or Studio edition and operating system. |
| A brand already has Adobe motion assets | Rehearse the agreed linked graphics workflow. | Agree a rendered or exchange-based graphics handoff and revise a sample. |
| An editor sends a programme for grading | Prepare the agreed project exchange and reference export. | Conform the same material and inspect cuts, speed changes and titles. |
| A small team wants a free starting point | Price the required subscription and supporting services. | Check actual media and required tools against the free edition. |
A documentary uses mixed camera formats
Can the intended licence handle the real rushes?
Adobe Premiere: Import authorised samples and build a short representative sequence.
DaVinci Resolve: Repeat in the intended free or Studio edition and operating system.
Record decode behaviour, proxy requirements and export acceptance on the actual workstation.
A brand already has Adobe motion assets
What remains editable at revision time?
Adobe Premiere: Rehearse the agreed linked graphics workflow.
DaVinci Resolve: Agree a rendered or exchange-based graphics handoff and revise a sample.
Count dependencies and manual revisions rather than inferring compatibility from a final video file.
An editor sends a programme for grading
Will the finishing conform match the edit?
Adobe Premiere: Prepare the agreed project exchange and reference export.
DaVinci Resolve: Conform the same material and inspect cuts, speed changes and titles.
Use timecoded references and a shot list; a successful import is not proof of an exact conform.
A small team wants a free starting point
Does the free edition cover the delivery?
Adobe Premiere: Price the required subscription and supporting services.
DaVinci Resolve: Check actual media and required tools against the free edition.
Include sound, fonts, plugins, backups and collaboration services in both budgets.
Prove the footage and delivery path
Build an evaluation package containing short authorised clips from every camera, one troublesome audio source, representative titles and the actual export specification. Record the operating system and application edition. A test with an easy stock clip does not answer whether the team can finish its own material. Use the same sequence and review criteria for both proposed workflows.
Check the exported file outside the editor and ask the intended recipient to review it. Include colour-space handling, audio channel layout, caption delivery and any required intermediate files. Separate a playback issue from a missing codec entitlement or a hardware bottleneck. These observations support a local purchasing decision; they do not establish that one editor is universally faster or better.
Make the next revision part of the brief
Project portability is more demanding than exporting a finished video. Agree whether the next person needs source media, editable graphics, an audio handoff or a complete working project. Rehearse one timeline exchange with time remapping, nested work, transitions and titles. Keep a reference movie so that discrepancies can be identified rather than guessed.
Price the workflow over the production period, including licence commitments, storage, cloud collaboration and any application that remains necessary for graphics or audio. Resolve’s free edition is a useful starting point when it meets the requirements; it does not imply that Studio features or cloud services are free. Premiere’s subscription should be evaluated against the actual included tools and the team’s existing assets.
Questions before you choose
Is DaVinci Resolve permanently free?
A continuing free edition exists. Resolve Studio is paid and has additional capabilities and format support.
Is Premiere the same as After Effects?
No. Premiere is the video editor; After Effects focuses on motion graphics and compositing. They can be used together.
Can a Premiere timeline move to Resolve unchanged?
An exchange workflow needs a representative conform test. Effects, titles and timing operations may require separate handling.
Which is better for colour grading?
Resolve has a dedicated colour workflow. Choose by the required finishing tasks, media support and handoff rather than an untested quality claim.
