Custom CPQ for complex products: planning with Configurix
Scope Configurix CPQ for product validity, account pricing, approvals and quote revisions, with an illustrative commercial workflow and acceptance checks.
Start with the commercial record, not the price label
Custom configure-price-quote software connects the product a customer is allowed to buy with the price and proposal the business is willing to issue. For a complex product, that can mean dependent components, account terms, services, approvals and revisions. A total displayed beside a 3D view is only one part of the job.
Configurix offers custom CPQ around a company’s catalogue, commercial rules and sales process. It is relevant when a product decision and the resulting quote need to stay connected. Scope the full transition from a valid specification to an issued proposal, then ask which parts remain with existing pricing, CRM or order systems.
Give product validity and price authority separate owners
A product can be valid without having a confirmed price. A pricing service can also return a number for an input the product team would reject. Decide which service can approve the product and which source controls the commercial calculation. The customer journey should distinguish an estimate, a confirmed calculation and an approval-required result.
Configurix’s pricing guidance allows calculation or connection to an existing authority, depending on the implementation. Document the source for the price list, account, currency, effective date, services, discounts and tax treatment. A translation or display-currency setting is not a substitute for that commercial context.
An illustrative quote lifecycle for made-to-order equipment
Consider a fictional equipment supplier issuing quote Q-240 for a configured enclosure. The table proposes a lifecycle to discuss; it is not an observed Configurix account or a statement of your legal quotation terms.
| State | Record to preserve | Decision before moving forward |
|---|---|---|
| Working draft | Product inputs and provisional calculation context | May this draft be recalculated on reopening? |
| Issued quote Q-240 / revision 1 | Exact specification, commercial lines and issued terms | Which changes require a new issued revision? |
| Customer requests a powered door | Requested change linked to the original quote | Are product validity, services and approval affected? |
| Issued quote Q-240 / revision 2 | New accepted scope and change history | Has the customer accepted the replacement revision? |
| Order created | Accepted commercial revision and destination reference | How will a later amendment be authorised? |
Ask the sales team to trace one changed selection through the product, the price and the proposal. A revised PDF without an identifiable relationship to the accepted specification leaves a reconciliation problem. The test should establish what the buyer approved, not merely show that a document can be generated.
Preserve issued quotes deliberately
Configurix distinguishes current calculations, saved drafts, issued quotes and accepted orders in its published pricing guidance. Its intended treatment is to retain issued commercial history and make deliberate revisions visible. Confirm the configured policy for your own market, expiry terms and sales process.
For acceptance, create a draft, issue it in an authorised test environment and then update an approved price input. Reopen the draft and the issued record separately. Record whether the draft is preserved, flagged or recalculated. The issued record should follow the agreed preservation policy; a change should have a clear revision and approval route. These are proposed checks, not results we have measured.
Test commercial permissions with the same example
A salesperson, dealer and approver may see different amounts and perform different actions. Define whether each person can view cost, adjust a selling price, request a discount or issue a proposal. Include an attempted action that must be denied. Testing only an administrator’s happy path will not establish that the commercial controls work.
Use a calculation approved independently by your commercial owner. Reconcile quantities, units, service lines, adjustment order, rounding and the final currency amount. Keep subscription charges for the configurator separate from the product prices it calculates. An example quotation is not evidence of software pricing or a forecast of margin improvement.
Agree the handoff after customer acceptance
Name the accepted revision, account and destination record that connect CPQ to the next system. Decide whether acceptance creates a CRM event, an ERP sales-order request or another agreed action. If the destination rejects a customer or product reference, the sales workflow needs a visible recovery state rather than an assumption that the order exists.
Download the custom configurator discovery brief. Use it to record the commercial owner, the change policy and the evidence required for acceptance. The ERP guide below expands the receiving-system checks; the product-rule guide covers validity before pricing.

Explore Configurix custom CPQ ↗Frequently asked questions
What is custom CPQ for complex products?
It is a configuration, pricing and quotation workflow tailored to a product model and commercial process. The scope can include account pricing, approvals, proposal content, revisions and the transition into receiving systems.
Should changing a price list change an issued quote?
The policy must be explicit. Configurix’s published pricing guidance distinguishes current calculations from preserved issued quotes and controlled revisions. Confirm the implementation and your own commercial terms.
Can existing ERP pricing remain authoritative?
The pricing source can be agreed during implementation. Define which system owns each calculation input and what the user sees if the required authority is unavailable.
How should we evaluate Configurix CPQ?
Use a representative valid product, an independently approved calculation, a restricted user action and an issued-quote amendment. Reconcile the accepted revision with the receiving record.
