Developer software comparison

Visual Studio Code vs Visual Studio

Choose between an extensible editor and an integrated IDE using your application stack, operating system and licensing needs.

START WITH YOUR BUYING BRIEF

Which development workflow fits your team?

Choose Visual Studio Code when you want a configurable editor across languages and local or remote environments. Choose Visual Studio when its integrated application workloads, debugging and Microsoft-stack tooling match the project. VS Code is free for commercial use; Visual Studio Community has organizational eligibility restrictions that must be checked separately.

Multi-language web team

Will developers configure tools across several stacks?

Visual Studio Code: Pilot the required language extensions, debugger and project tasks.

Visual Studio: Check that selected workloads support the same application stack.

Measure setup steps and reproducibility, not just whether syntax highlighting works.

Windows application team

Does the project require integrated application tooling?

Visual Studio Code: Identify each required build, design and debugging tool outside the editor.

Visual Studio: Evaluate the corresponding Windows or .NET workload and edition.

Use one existing application to verify the complete build and debugging path.

Remote development

Must the project run in SSH, WSL or containers?

Visual Studio Code: Map the environment to a documented remote extension workflow.

Visual Studio: Check the exact supported remote or cross-target workflow for the IDE.

Desktop availability and the environment where code executes are different requirements.

Managed company rollout

Which users can legally use the proposed edition?

Visual Studio Code: Verify the free editor license and manage approved extensions and AI access.

Visual Studio: Check Community eligibility or quote Professional/Enterprise seats.

A free download should not be treated as approval for every organizational use.

Compare the complete toolchain for one project

The two products can both edit code, so a superficial feature checklist hides the buying question. Choose a representative project and list what a developer must do to open it, restore dependencies, build it, debug a failure, run tests and prepare a release. Include compilers, SDKs, terminals and any required design tools in that list.

VS Code puts more of that configuration into extensions, project settings and external runtimes. Visual Studio groups application tooling into installed workloads, with some diagnostics depending on edition. Neither approach makes a project automatically reproducible: maintain the setup instructions and validate them on a clean development machine.

Keep editor licensing separate from AI access

Microsoft says VS Code is free for private and commercial use. Visual Studio Community allows individuals to create their own free or paid apps, while organizations have specific eligibility rules. A company should verify the actual usage scenario rather than apply VS Code’s unrestricted editor pricing statement to a different product.

AI integration is another purchase layer. Having an editor or IDE installed does not provide unlimited Copilot, remote compute or every third-party extension. Decide who needs AI assistance, which provider and controls are approved, and where costs are tracked. This makes the environment comparison useful even when both candidates can be downloaded for free.

Questions before you choose

Are Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio the same product?

No. VS Code is an extensible editor; Visual Studio is an integrated IDE with workload-based application development tools and separate editions.

Can a business use VS Code for free?

Microsoft’s FAQ says VS Code is free for private and commercial use. Connected services, some extensions and AI products can have their own costs and terms.

Can every company use Visual Studio Community for free?

No. Individual use and organizational use have different conditions. Check Microsoft’s Community page and applicable license for your company and scenario.

Does either purchase include unlimited AI coding?

No general unlimited-AI entitlement follows from editor access. Check the chosen AI subscription, feature access, usage allowance and administrative controls separately.

Turn the comparison into your own evaluation
