Splunk Observability vs New Relic
Compare Splunk Observability and New Relic for telemetry collection, incident context, free access and the host or usage assumptions behind a production estimate.
Which monitoring approach fits?
Consider Splunk Observability when its OpenTelemetry collection and application/infrastructure investigation fit the estate. Consider New Relic when its telemetry platform and selected access model fit the same work. Splunk Observability is not the whole Splunk portfolio. Keep the wider log and security products separate, and compare the precise package, retained signals and user access needed for an incident. A small free deployment is a useful starting point, not a production cost forecast.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | Splunk Observability | New Relic |
|---|---|---|
| Product boundary | Splunk application and infrastructure observability offering | New Relic telemetry and observability platform |
| Collection plan | OpenTelemetry-centred collection; check runtime and signal support | Supported agents and OpenTelemetry collection; check actual signal support |
| Investigation | Connect application, infrastructure and relevant log context | Connect application, infrastructure and related telemetry |
| Splunk scope | Wider Splunk Cloud and security products are separate | Do not assume New Relic replaces a separate security platform |
| Free access | Observability Cloud Free Edition covers up to 15 hosts | Free access has its own current usage and feature limits |
| Production estimate | Confirm the host-based offer and any additional product scope | Confirm the selected ingestion, access and commercial model |
| Operational ownership | Own instrumentation, collector policy and alert handover | Own instrumentation, collector policy and alert handover |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | Proposed exercise | Accept when |
|---|---|---|
| Free edition fit | Map hosts, data and engineer access to the exact offer | Required capabilities and allowances are recorded |
| Worker visibility | Follow an approved failed job through its dependencies | The job and relevant telemetry can be located |
| Log connection | List every product required to reach log evidence | Entitlements and retention are explicit |
| Growth cost | Estimate a larger estate and engineering team | All changed billing units are visible |
Small estate
Does the free arrangement cover the real evaluation environment?
Splunk Observability: Map the proposed hosts and required features to the 15-host Free Edition.
New Relic: Map the same data and users to the current free arrangement.
A host allowance and a data allowance cannot be compared by their headline numbers alone.
Failed background job
Can an engineer find the failing worker and its dependency?
Splunk Observability: Collect the worker traces and infrastructure signals through the supported path.
New Relic: Collect the same signals through the selected agents or collector.
Include a non-web workload rather than evaluating only a polished frontend demonstration.
Existing Splunk logs
Which components and entitlements are required to follow log context?
Splunk Observability: Specify the actual log platform and how it connects to the investigation.
New Relic: Specify the proposed log ingest, retention and correlation arrangement.
Record additional products and licences instead of treating all Splunk capabilities as one included package.
Growing team
Can the forecast explain more hosts, data and engineer access?
Splunk Observability: Apply the actual offer to estate growth and any added capability.
New Relic: Apply the selected commercial model to increased data and access.
Use identical incident and retention requirements for both estimates.
Name the products in the proposal
A Splunk logo on a quote does not describe which observability, log analytics or security products are included. Write the specific product names and explain where logs are retained, how they are queried and what access the on-call engineer receives. Apply the same discipline to the New Relic package.
For an existing customer, separately record any contract or collector that can be reused. Existing spend can influence a decision, but it should not conceal a missing capability or a dependency that a new customer would need to purchase.
Keep free access and production cost separate
Splunk currently advertises an Observability Cloud Free Edition for up to 15 hosts rather than only a short trial. New Relic also offers free access with its own allowances. Confirm the current feature, usage and access boundaries before classifying a real deployment as covered.
Build the paid estimate from the selected commercial model. Host counts, telemetry ingest and engineer access are different dimensions. Include the actual signal volume and operational responsibilities so that a wider rollout does not inherit assumptions from a small initial environment.
Questions before you choose
Is Splunk Observability the same as Splunk Cloud Platform?
No. The wider Splunk portfolio includes separate products. Record the specific observability, log analytics and security entitlements needed.
Is Splunk Observability Free Edition just a time-limited trial?
The current Free Edition is advertised for up to 15 hosts without a trial expiry. Check its precise capability and account terms before relying on it.
Can host limits be compared directly with telemetry allowances?
No. Measure the actual hosts, data, retention and user requirements, then map them to each offer.
