Replit Agent vs Devin Desktop
Compare Replit Agent and Devin Desktop for app creation, existing repositories, review, publication and the separate costs of building and running software.
Which workflow fits your team?
Consider Replit Agent when an integrated conversational app-building and publishing workspace fits the project. Consider Devin Desktop when its agent workspace and full IDE fit a repository-centred development process. Define the application’s running environment separately: a coding-agent subscription is not automatically a production hosting package.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | Replit Agent | Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf) |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Conversational app-building platform | Agent workspace alongside a full IDE |
| App services | Replit database, auth and integration workflows | Choose and configure the app’s required services |
| Review surface | Inspect the app, changes and platform behaviour | Inspect changes and debug within the IDE |
| Publication | Platform publishing has plan and resource conditions | Specify the intended deployment target separately |
| Free boundary | Starter Lite build; included app link expires after 30 days | Light desktop agent quota with limited models |
| Paid boundary | Full build, connectors and other features vary by plan | Paid quotas, models and cloud-agent scope differ |
| Costing | Agent effort plus running app resources | Agent plan plus the chosen app infrastructure |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | Proposed exercise | Accept when |
|---|---|---|
| App brief | Can the team implement one required user journey? | The owner can complete the journey and inspect its stored outcome. |
| External dependency | Does the chosen plan allow the needed service connection? | The dependency and its operator are explicit. |
| Publication boundary | What does the app need to remain available after the pilot? | Availability does not depend on an overlooked trial or temporary link. |
| Maintenance handover | Can a second owner review and change the app? | The second owner can perform a scoped follow-up change. |
App brief
Can the team implement one required user journey?
Replit Agent: Build the defined journey in a permitted Replit workspace.
Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf): Implement the same journey in a test repository.
The owner can complete the journey and inspect its stored outcome.
External dependency
Does the chosen plan allow the needed service connection?
Replit Agent: Check the actual connector and integration entitlement.
Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf): Check the implementation and credentials for the chosen service.
The dependency and its operator are explicit.
Publication boundary
What does the app need to remain available after the pilot?
Replit Agent: Record the retained publishing plan and expiry conditions.
Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf): Specify deployment target, operations and recurring services.
Availability does not depend on an overlooked trial or temporary link.
Maintenance handover
Can a second owner review and change the app?
Replit Agent: Review workspace access, app files and service ownership.
Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf): Review repository, IDE and deployment ownership.
The second owner can perform a scoped follow-up change.
Separate creating the application from operating it
Replit connects Agent work with platform services and publishing, but the retained account still determines what is included. Starter currently limits Agent to Lite build and its included published-app link goes down after 30 days. Confirm the paid arrangement needed for the intended operation.
Devin Desktop provides an agent workspace and IDE; name the actual infrastructure and deployment process in your brief. Treat databases, external APIs, backups and operational ownership as part of the application decision on both sides.
Make the handover a buying requirement
Use an ordinary app journey with a stored record, a permitted change and a second maintainer. Keep credentials out of the written evaluation and assign service accounts to the intended owner.
A generated preview is an intermediate result. Record how another person reviews the code, changes the app and maintains the services after the original build session ends. This comparison does not claim completed deployment or security tests.
Questions before you choose
Does Replit Starter provide indefinite free app publishing?
Its current included published-app link goes down after 30 days. Confirm current plan, app and resource terms for retained operation.
Does Devin Desktop include my application’s production hosting?
Do not assume so. Specify the actual hosting, database and operating services separately from the coding-agent account.
Are the products identical alternatives?
No. The shared buying need is agent-assisted app development, but their workspace and operating boundaries differ. Compare the same user journey and maintenance handover.
