Monitoring software comparison

PRTG Network Monitor vs Nagios XI

Compare PRTG Network Monitor and Nagios XI for network checks, discovery, deployment responsibility and the different limits of sensors, nodes and services.

START WITH YOUR BUYING BRIEF

Which monitoring approach fits?

Shortlist PRTG Network Monitor when its sensor-based checks and operating workflow fit the estate. Shortlist Nagios XI when its host and service configuration, plugins and chosen edition fit the same requirements. Build a check inventory before comparing prices: PRTG sensors are not the same licensing unit as Nagios XI nodes. Their free editions also have different ceilings, so a device count alone cannot establish which is covered.

Eight small hosts

Will a small estate fit a free edition?

PRTG Network Monitor: Count the actual sensors, even if each device needs few checks.

Nagios XI: Eight nodes exceed the current seven-node free ceiling regardless of a low service count.

This is a licence-limit illustration, not a measured test; the PRTG result depends on the real sensor inventory.

One busy server

Can one important host exhaust a free allowance?

PRTG Network Monitor: Count each required sensor and compare the total with 100.

Nagios XI: Count required services as well as nodes against the 100-service free ceiling.

Neither offer grants unlimited checks simply because only one physical server is involved.

Restricted branch

Can the monitoring system reach a site without excessive network access?

PRTG Network Monitor: Document probe placement and sensor communication for the branch.

Nagios XI: Document the XI check path, plugin and allowed communication.

Use only approved test credentials and describe firewall dependencies and ownership.

Growing estate

Which parts of the bill change as monitoring coverage grows?

PRTG Network Monitor: Map the expanded check inventory to the current sensor subscription.

Nagios XI: Map hosts to the paid node licence and check edition, maintenance and support.

A larger check inventory can affect sensor licensing and operational capacity differently from host licensing.

Count checks before comparing licences

A switch may need availability, interface, traffic, environmental and other measurements. PRTG can use several sensors for that single device. Nagios XI represents hosts and their service checks differently. Do not use a suggested devices-per-licence estimate as a contractual sensor entitlement.

The current free thresholds are concrete: PRTG provides 100 sensors, while Nagios XI provides seven nodes or 100 services, whichever is reached first. A claim that both support the same number of devices would erase a material difference. Create a separate inventory for each product and record how each requirement is implemented.

Include the monitoring server in the plan

Nagios XI requires an operated server and a maintained configuration and plugin arrangement. PRTG Network Monitor also requires an appropriate deployment, probe design and operational ownership. Confirm the supported environment, upgrade route and backup procedure for the actual product versions.

For a paid proposal, distinguish PRTG subscription sizing from Nagios XI node licensing, edition and maintenance. Include the cost of retaining configuration, rotating credentials and responding when the monitoring system fails. A perpetual licence does not remove the need for ongoing operations.

Questions before you choose

Does one PRTG sensor mean one device?

No. A sensor monitors a particular aspect, and a device can require several sensors. Count the actual checks.

What is Nagios XI’s current free limit?

The current free edition covers up to seven nodes or 100 services, whichever is reached first. It is a self-supported arrangement; confirm the terms for the intended deployment.

Is Nagios XI the same as Nagios Core?

No. XI is a separate product built around a broader management experience. Compare the exact XI edition rather than applying every Core assumption to it.
