Metabase vs Apache Superset

Compare Metabase and Apache Superset for visual questions, SQL workflows, self-management, paid controls and responsibility for database access.

START WITH YOUR BUYING BRIEF

Which approach fits your analytics work?

Consider Metabase when its visual question builder, SQL workflow and hosted or self-managed packages suit the intended users. Consider Apache Superset when its chart builder, SQL Lab and configurable deployment fit a SQL-oriented team. Both can be self-managed; the important commercial distinction is what hosting, support and access controls are actually included.

These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.

A non-SQL colleague

Can a colleague answer a grouped business question?

Metabase: Use the visual question builder over a prepared source.

Apache Superset: Use the chart builder over the equivalent dataset.

Observe the data fields and assumptions they need help understanding.

A SQL analyst

Can an analyst inspect and maintain a reusable query?

Metabase: Create a SQL question and define its ownership.

Apache Superset: Create the query in SQL Lab and its dataset or chart handover.

Use the same database account and read-only workload.

Two departments

Can one department be prevented from exporting another’s rows?

Metabase: Check the actual edition’s permission and data-segregation scope.

Apache Superset: Configure roles and database access for isolated test identities.

A hidden navigation item is not proof that the underlying data is inaccessible.

An upgrade

Can the service be restored after a failed change?

Metabase: Exercise the selected self-managed or cloud recovery process.

Apache Superset: Exercise the deployment’s metadata backup and restoration process.

Document application metadata as well as source-database recovery.

Free software still needs an operating plan

Metabase Open Source and Apache Superset can both be considered without a software subscription. That does not make the deployed service free to operate. Record hosting, metadata storage, upgrades and the person responding to failures.

Metabase’s commercial packages and independent Superset managed providers are different contracts. Compare their actual service and feature scope rather than assigning a hosted vendor’s promises to the Apache project.

Check the database boundary

Give the evaluation database account only the intended access. Application-level permissions should be examined alongside database credentials, exports and any SQL-capable user role.

If granular restrictions are mandatory, establish the relevant Metabase package or Superset configuration before the usability demo. A successful administrator session says little about a restricted colleague’s experience.

Questions before you choose

Are both free?

Free self-managed software is available for both. Hosting, operations, commercial support and some Metabase capabilities have separate costs.

Is Apache Superset a managed cloud service?

The Apache project is software. A managed Superset service, if chosen, comes from a separate provider with its own contract.

Can I compare only the dashboard editor?

That is useful for authoring, but it leaves permissions, database load, backup and maintenance unresolved. Include those in an adoption decision.
