Collaboration software comparison

Mattermost vs Rocket.Chat

Compare Mattermost and Rocket.Chat for self-managed messaging, free-edition boundaries, guest access, integrations and the operations behind a retained production deployment.

START WITH YOUR BUYING BRIEF

Which collaboration approach fits?

Consider Mattermost when its channel and operational workflow fits the organisation. Consider Rocket.Chat when its conversation, integration and selected engagement scope fit the same brief. Compare the exact edition and version: free software, a limited evaluation and a commercial package are different entitlements. Self-hosting changes who operates the service; it does not by itself establish every security, retention or availability requirement.

Small deployment

Does the actual free edition cover the intended team?

Mattermost: Identify Team Edition or limited Entry/evaluation rather than treating them as one offer.

Rocket.Chat: Identify Community or Starter, including Starter’s current 50-user boundary.

Record supported features and operating conditions, not just whether a download is available.

Operational integration

Can a service event reach the right discussion with useful context?

Mattermost: Validate the selected integration and the permissions it needs.

Rocket.Chat: Validate the corresponding app or integration and permissions.

Use synthetic events and avoid exposing production credentials or customer records in an evaluation.

Outside contributor

Can a collaborator participate without unrelated access?

Mattermost: Check the guest and identity features in the exact edition.

Rocket.Chat: Check the guest and identity features in the exact plan.

Inspect file links, history and invitation rights as well as initial channel membership.

Restore the service

Can the operator recover messages, files and configuration?

Mattermost: Plan the database, file store, configuration and version-compatible restore.

Rocket.Chat: Plan the database, file store, configuration and version-compatible restore.

Use an isolated destination and reconcile test messages and attachments; no recovery-time measurement is reported here.

Do not flatten the free offers

Mattermost documents Team Edition separately from Entry and paid packages. Rocket.Chat documents Community separately from Starter and commercial offers. A feature available in an evaluation should not silently become a permanent production assumption. Keep the version, edition and required controls beside each result.

For any required identity integration, guest role, mobile notification or export, check the exact offer. A self-managed installation can be appropriate while still needing a paid capability or support agreement. Mark an unverified requirement as unresolved rather than inferring it from the platform name.

Own the running service

List the database, file storage, backups, monitoring, updates and credentials. Assign routine tasks and an incident owner, then test a restore using synthetic messages and attachments. A backup job succeeding does not prove that the collaboration service can be recovered.

Compare this operating scope with the scope of any managed proposal. Include support coverage and infrastructure costs, but do not label either product categorically more secure or reliable without an appropriate measured evaluation and a defined deployment.

Questions before you choose

Is Mattermost Team Edition the same as Entry?

No. The documented editions have different scope. Identify the exact edition and version before assigning features or limits.

Is Rocket.Chat Community the same as Starter?

No. Starter is a separate free offer currently scoped to up to 50 users; Community and commercial packages have different capabilities and conditions.

Does self-hosting remove operating costs?

No. Servers, databases, storage, maintenance, monitoring and recovery still need resources and ownership.
