Collaboration software comparison

Google Chat vs Slack

Compare Google Chat and Slack for team conversations, external collaboration, file permissions, message history and the cost of the actual workspace arrangement.

START WITH YOUR BUYING BRIEF

Which collaboration approach fits?

Consider Google Chat when Google Workspace is already the team’s collaboration environment. Consider Slack when its channel workflow, integrations and selected commercial arrangement fit the work. Both need explicit rules for durable decisions, external access and connected files. Evaluate with the same participants and account types: a personal Chat conversation and a managed business workspace are different arrangements.

Daily project discussion

Can the team follow a decision without reading unrelated traffic?

Google Chat: Use the intended space and thread structure with a short sample project.

Slack: Use the intended channels and thread structure for the same project.

Record how a final decision is promoted into maintained knowledge rather than assuming chat is a permanent handbook.

Drive attachment

Can the invited colleague actually open and edit the linked file?

Google Chat: Check both space membership and the underlying Drive permission.

Slack: Check the channel and the same underlying Drive permission.

A message containing a URL does not grant the file’s required access.

Supplier conversation

Can an external participant join only the intended work?

Google Chat: Validate the actual external-space/account and administrator arrangement.

Slack: Validate the actual guest or shared-channel arrangement in the selected plan.

Recheck linked resources and the removal process with an isolated test guest.

Old decision

Can an authorised user retrieve the required historical discussion?

Google Chat: Check the intended account’s history and organisational retention policy.

Slack: Check the plan’s accessible history and retention settings.

Searchability today and preservation for a required future period are separate requirements.

Treat message access and file access separately

A shared conversation is often the route to a document, not the document’s permission system. Specify where each file lives and who can view, edit or reshare it. Then test with the intended colleague or external identity. An administrator’s successful click hides the most important access boundary.

When a project closes, decide which files and decisions should move into an organisation-owned location. Leaving the only copy in someone’s personal storage can create a handover problem regardless of which chat application carried the link.

Compare complete business arrangements

Google documents differences between personal Chat and Workspace accounts. Slack similarly distinguishes free and paid workspace capabilities. Use the same requirement for participants, history, administration and connected work before deciding what the team must buy.

Count existing subscriptions carefully, but do not interpret an included chat app as proof that every retention, external-sharing or AI feature is available. Evaluate the exact account and administrator policy, then keep the confirmed scope beside the price.

Questions before you choose

Does a Google Chat or Slack message automatically grant access to a Drive file?

No. The underlying Drive item retains its own sharing permissions.

Is personal Google Chat identical to a managed Workspace deployment?

No. Account features and administration differ. Check the intended identities and Workspace edition.

Should important procedures exist only in chat?

Define a maintained home for durable guidance and decisions. Conversation history alone does not assign review or ownership.
