GitHub vs GitLab
Compare repositories, delivery pipelines, hosting choices and the work involved in moving an established engineering team.
Which development workflow fits your team?
Choose GitHub when public collaboration, pull-request workflows and its connected developer ecosystem fit your team. Shortlist GitLab when you want code, pipelines and security processes in one platform with a self-managed option. For an existing estate, migration effort and required governance are more useful deciding factors than the lowest seat price.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | GitHub | GitLab |
|---|---|---|
| Code changes | Repositories, pull requests and reviews | Repositories, merge requests and reviews |
| Delivery automation | GitHub Actions workflows | GitLab CI/CD pipelines |
| Planning | Issues and Projects | Issues and project-management capabilities by tier |
| Hosted free access | Unlimited public/private repositories with service allowances | Free hosted access; private top-level groups limited to five users |
| Self-managed route | Enterprise Server is a paid deployment option | Free and paid self-managed tiers |
| Security purchase | Dependabot plus separately scoped advanced security services | Security tools expand across Free, Premium and Ultimate |
| AI spend | Copilot subscriptions and credit usage are separate considerations | Duo capabilities and GitLab Credits require plan-specific checks |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | GitHub evaluation | GitLab evaluation |
|---|---|---|
| Review policy | Required reviewers and repository rules | Approval and merge controls in chosen tier |
| Delivery capacity | Hosted and self-hosted runner cost | Hosted compute allowance and owned runners |
| Operational control | Cloud vs Enterprise Server responsibilities | GitLab.com vs self-managed responsibilities |
| AI budget | Seats plus credit and related usage | Duo access and GitLab Credit terms |
Public library maintainers
Where will contributors propose changes and report bugs?
GitHub: Evaluate GitHub’s public repository and pull-request workflow against where contributors already work.
GitLab: Evaluate GitLab’s public projects and contribution process with your likely maintainers.
Use contributor access and review ownership as acceptance criteria; popularity alone does not close a release.
Private delivery team
Can the service run the current build and release pipeline?
GitHub: Inventory Actions workflows, secrets, environments and runner requirements.
GitLab: Map existing jobs to GitLab pipeline configuration and runners.
A successful build is only one check: include approval, rollback and artifact retention.
Self-managed engineering
Who will operate the platform and manage upgrades?
GitHub: Scope Enterprise Server licensing and the infrastructure team’s responsibilities.
GitLab: Choose a self-managed tier and budget for operating the application, runners and storage.
Software entitlement does not provide an internal backup, incident or upgrade owner.
Security procurement
Which controls are mandatory across private repositories?
GitHub: Check repository rules, organization controls and advanced security packages.
GitLab: Check the exact security and compliance functions in the proposed tier.
Ask for a written feature-to-requirement mapping before assuming a top-tier plan covers every security workflow.
Treat delivery migration as a separate workstream
The expensive part of moving a mature team is often its delivery contract: which job runs, where secrets come from, who can approve production and how a failed deployment is investigated. Export a representative release path before comparing interfaces. A repository import can preserve code while leaving these surrounding processes incomplete.
Use one low-risk service as a pilot. Require the proposed platform to build it, preserve review requirements, publish the right artifact and explain a failed run. Record configuration work and ongoing ownership alongside subscription cost. This produces evidence about your environment without claiming either platform is inherently faster.
Separate hosting, governance and variable consumption
GitHub Free and GitLab Free both offer useful ongoing access, but their hosted quotas and organizational rules differ. The GitLab.com five-user restriction applies to private top-level Free groups; it is not a general cap on every deployment. GitHub’s free repository count similarly says little about how much paid compute or storage a busy delivery process will consume.
Build the quote in layers: seats, mandatory governance, runners, stored artifacts, security products and AI usage. Then add a named operational owner for any self-managed components. If one platform already satisfies your controls, a lower headline price elsewhere needs to outweigh the transition and support work.
Questions before you choose
Is GitHub or GitLab free?
Both offer ongoing free access. Hosted resource allowances and collaboration rules differ; GitLab also offers a self-managed Free tier that requires your infrastructure.
Does either platform include unlimited CI/CD?
Hosted compute has plan allowances and possible additional charges. Self-hosted runners move work onto infrastructure you operate, which still has a real cost.
Should a team migrate just to get AI coding tools?
Compare the needed AI service and integration first. An AI subscription is a separate decision from moving repositories, release pipelines and planning history.
Which platform is more secure?
There is no universal answer from a feature list. Match mandatory controls to the exact plan, deployment and configuration, then validate them in your environment.
Turn the comparison into your own evaluation
Use the same criteria and priorities for both products, keep unknowns unassessed and record the plan and evidence behind your ratings.
