Identity and access comparison

Firebase Authentication vs Cognito

Compare Firebase Authentication and Cognito for web or mobile sign-in, identity-provider scope, active users, phone charges and application permissions.

START WITH YOUR BUYING BRIEF

Which identity approach fits the brief?

Consider Firebase Authentication when its SDK and Firebase integration fit the application and retained upgrade status. Consider Cognito when its user pools, AWS architecture and selected tier fit the same sign-in brief. Compare the actual providers and recovery journey. Base authentication, enterprise federation, phone messaging and machine access can have different feature and charging boundaries.

First sign-in

Can a customer use the required provider on the intended device?

Firebase Authentication: Use the actual Firebase SDK, provider and upgrade status.

Amazon Cognito: Use the actual Cognito user-pool SDK or API path.

Verify the application user mapping, not only the provider’s confirmation.

Account recovery

Does the approved recovery journey preserve the correct app account?

Firebase Authentication: Exercise the selected authentication method’s supported recovery.

Amazon Cognito: Exercise the selected user-pool method’s supported recovery.

Use test accounts and document the support owner.

A restricted record

Can the same user reach only their permitted app data?

Firebase Authentication: Check the actual app and data-service authorisation configuration.

Amazon Cognito: Check the actual app and data-service authorisation configuration.

A successful authentication token is not permission to every record.

A mixed-method audience

What does the retained authentication mix cost?

Firebase Authentication: Model ordinary users, Identity Platform federation and SMS.

Amazon Cognito: Model the selected tiers, user types, tokens and messaging.

Keep regional, quota and billing conditions with the estimate.

Choose the application and provider journey

List the platforms, identity providers, recovery method and user identifier the application requires. Then confirm those dependencies against the actual Firebase upgrade status or Cognito tier.

An SDK sample demonstrates a particular sign-in route, not every production requirement. Include error states, account mapping and recovery in the proposed acceptance brief.

Separate ordinary users, federation and messaging

Firebase pricing distinguishes base authentication from Identity Platform and its SAML/OIDC allowance; phone SMS has separate charging. The app’s other Firebase services also remain outside a sign-in-only estimate.

Cognito similarly distinguishes direct/social users, enterprise federation, tiers and machine tokens. Use a mixed-method workload sheet rather than one undifferentiated free-user count.

Questions before you choose

Does Firebase Authentication include every Identity Platform feature?

No. Verify whether the project uses the Identity Platform upgrade and which capability and quota it requires.

Is phone authentication covered by an ordinary free-user figure?

Do not assume that. Both proposals need their messaging and authentication-method costs scoped explicitly.

Does signing in automatically grant database access?

No. The application and connected data services need their own effective permission checks.
