Monitoring software comparison

Elastic Observability vs Grafana

Compare Elastic Observability with Grafana OSS and Grafana Cloud, including telemetry storage, managed services, free features and responsibility for retention.

START WITH YOUR BUYING BRIEF

Which monitoring approach fits?

Elastic Observability is a candidate when an Elastic-based telemetry and investigation workflow fits the data. Grafana is a candidate when its dashboards and the chosen metrics, logs and trace backends fit the architecture. First specify whether Grafana means the OSS visualisation application or Grafana Cloud, and whether Elastic means self-managed, hosted or serverless. Those arrangements carry different storage, operating and pricing responsibilities; a dashboard alone is not a complete telemetry backend.

Existing data sources

Can the team use the databases and telemetry stores it already operates?

Elastic Observability: Document what must be collected or ingested into the Elastic workflow.

Grafana: Connect the proposed sources and verify the exact query capabilities.

A dashboard connection does not transfer storage, backup or retention responsibility.

Application incident

Can one service identity connect a metric, trace and useful log?

Elastic Observability: Collect the three signals and follow the service through the chosen deployment.

Grafana: Use the selected backends and Grafana investigation workflow.

Record missing instrumentation or labels rather than assuming visual proximity establishes correlation.

Thirty-day investigation

Will the needed evidence still be available after the incident?

Elastic Observability: Set the actual lifecycle, storage and query requirements.

Grafana: Set the same evidence window in every relevant backend.

A dashboard time picker cannot retrieve data that its source has already removed.

Self-managed team

Who handles upgrades, capacity and a failed storage node?

Elastic Observability: Assign ownership for the selected Elastic components and lifecycle.

Grafana: Assign ownership for Grafana and each self-operated backend.

Price operator time and recovery requirements beside infrastructure, not only the software licence.

A dashboard needs a data architecture

Grafana OSS can query multiple data sources, but the application does not make every connected source into a managed observability service. Name the metric store, log store and trace backend, then explain which components run in your infrastructure. Grafana Cloud is a different managed arrangement.

Elastic also has multiple deployment choices. Do not use a self-managed Basic feature description as evidence that a serverless or hosted service has the same entitlement or cost. Evaluate the actual deployment that the team would keep after the initial trial.

Design retention per signal

Set an evidence requirement before a retention period: for example, the log detail needed to investigate a failed order, the trace context linking a slow request and the metric history used to establish a baseline. Some signals may need different retention and access.

Estimate the storage and processing implications of those choices. For self-managed infrastructure, include replication, backups, upgrades and capacity. For managed services, check the current plan and usage dimensions. Free software or a free allowance does not remove the cost of preserving useful evidence.

Questions before you choose

Is Grafana OSS a complete managed metrics, logs and traces service?

No. It is a visualisation application that connects to data sources. Name the backends and operating arrangement; Grafana Cloud provides a separate managed offer.

Is every Elastic Observability capability free?

No. Elastic has free Basic capabilities and paid features. Hosted and serverless services have their own pricing and scope.

Does a dashboard retention setting control every connected source?

No. The source backend must retain and expose the data. Verify each signal’s lifecycle and query availability.
