DataGrip vs DBeaver
Compare DataGrip and DBeaver for SQL editing, database connections, Community versus commercial access, and the permissions needed for everyday data work.
Which environment fits the work?
Shortlist DataGrip for a dedicated JetBrains SQL workflow, especially where the team already uses its database tooling. Shortlist DBeaver when its Community or selected commercial edition covers the required connections and tasks. Both are clients, not database engines. Verify the actual driver, authentication route, editing permissions and export before deciding.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | DataGrip | DBeaver |
|---|---|---|
| Product role | Database client and SQL IDE | Database client with Community and commercial products |
| Query work | SQL assistance, inspections and refactoring | SQL editor, query results and database navigation |
| Data handling | Result editing and import/export workflows | Result editing and import/export workflows |
| Free access | Eligible non-commercial use; commercial subscription separate | Open-source Community Edition; PRO products separate |
| Existing tools | Check database features already included in another JetBrains IDE | Check whether Community covers the task before selecting PRO |
| Connection scope | Match supported database, driver and authentication | Match edition, driver and authentication requirements |
| Server responsibility | Server hosting, backups and permissions remain separate | Server hosting, backups and permissions remain separate |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | Exercise | Accept when |
|---|---|---|
| Read access | Run the report with a read-only database identity | No write privileges are required |
| Change control | Cancel and then commit a test correction | The transaction outcome is understood |
| Connection fit | Use the exact driver and identity arrangement | The intended edition supports it |
| Export fidelity | Export a small edge-case dataset | Values and format survive reimport |
Read-only reporting
Can an analyst answer a question without write privileges?
DataGrip: Connect with a read-only database identity and run the agreed query.
DBeaver: Use the selected edition with the same read-only identity.
A client-side warning is not a replacement for server-side permission boundaries.
Controlled correction
Can a permitted editor review a small change before committing it?
DataGrip: Rehearse a single-row edit against an approved test database.
DBeaver: Rehearse the same edit using the intended data-editor workflow.
Check the transaction boundary and prove that a cancelled change leaves the data untouched.
Required cloud connection
Does the edition support the actual identity and driver route?
DataGrip: Check the supported database version and authentication setup.
DBeaver: Check the precise Community or PRO entitlement for the same connection.
Do not treat a vendor logo in a support list as proof that every login method is included.
Repeatable export
Can a colleague regenerate the agreed data file?
DataGrip: Save the SQL and record delimiter, encoding, date and null handling.
DBeaver: Save the same query and export settings in the selected edition.
Use synthetic records containing Unicode, empty values and a timestamp.
Choose the connection and task before choosing the edition
List the database version, connection route and identity provider before comparing feature names. A query that works with a local password login may not prove that a company’s managed authentication route will work. Ask the responsible database team to define a supported test connection.
DBeaver Community and commercial products have different scopes. DataGrip also has distinct commercial and eligible non-commercial arrangements. Record the precise offer beside each acceptance result. A successful evaluation under one offer is not evidence that another edition includes it.
Separate client convenience from database safeguards
Use a test database with synthetic records when rehearsing edits or schema changes. Define which commands an analyst, developer and administrator should be allowed to run, then test with those identities. Keep production permissions with the database owner.
For exports, inspect representation as well as row count. Decimal values, time zones, nulls and Unicode can cause downstream errors even when the file opens correctly. Save the query and output settings with the result so the next person can reproduce it.
Questions before you choose
Is DataGrip free for commercial database work?
Its free non-commercial offer is conditional. Commercial use requires the appropriate paid entitlement; confirm the current agreement and any existing JetBrains bundle.
Does DBeaver Community include every PRO feature?
No. Check the selected edition for the required database, driver, identity method, administration and support workflow.
Do these products replace PostgreSQL or MySQL?
No. They are clients that connect to database systems. The database engine, hosting, backups and access permissions are separate decisions.
