Claude Code vs Gemini CLI
Compare Claude Code and Gemini CLI for repository tasks, terminal tools, account eligibility, permissions and the usage arrangement behind each coding session.
Which workflow fits your team?
Shortlist Claude Code when its repository workflow and Claude subscription or provider route fit your team. Shortlist Gemini CLI when its open-source terminal client, extension approach and Google authentication route fit. Compare one reviewed code change under the account you would retain; a free client or a paid subscription alone does not determine the cost or quality of a task.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | Claude Code | Gemini CLI |
|---|---|---|
| Primary workflow | Coding agent across terminal, IDE and app surfaces | Open-source agent centred on the terminal |
| Repository work | File changes and commands within a development session | File and shell tools with local project context |
| Project guidance | Project instructions and extensibility | Context files and extensions |
| Tool connections | MCP and development-tool connections | MCP and extension connections |
| Access route | Eligible subscription, API or supported provider | Google sign-in, API key or Vertex AI |
| Free boundary | Free Claude chat is not unlimited Code access | Limited free model usage depends on authentication |
| Costing unit | Subscription allowance or provider usage | Account quota, subscription or provider usage |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | Proposed exercise | Accept when |
|---|---|---|
| One repository change | Can the agent implement a specified change with a reviewable diff? | The change satisfies a written requirement and passes owner-reviewed checks. |
| Command approval | Can the reviewer identify what commands and file changes were permitted? | The owner understands the permissions used and can reject an unwanted action. |
| Project context | Can another developer reproduce the intended conventions? | Instructions and resulting changes are attributable and reviewable. |
| Usage boundary | What account paid for the work and what allowance changed? | Included usage and any additional charge are distinguishable. |
One repository change
Can the agent implement a specified change with a reviewable diff?
Claude Code: Use the retained Claude Code surface and a clean test branch.
Gemini CLI: Use the retained Gemini CLI account and the same clean branch.
The change satisfies a written requirement and passes owner-reviewed checks.
Command approval
Can the reviewer identify what commands and file changes were permitted?
Claude Code: Review the session configuration and permitted tools.
Gemini CLI: Review the CLI settings and permitted tools.
The owner understands the permissions used and can reject an unwanted action.
Project context
Can another developer reproduce the intended conventions?
Claude Code: Provide a short project instruction and inspect the result.
Gemini CLI: Provide the matching project context and inspect the result.
Instructions and resulting changes are attributable and reviewable.
Usage boundary
What account paid for the work and what allowance changed?
Claude Code: Record subscription usage or provider billing for the session.
Gemini CLI: Record the actual sign-in route and its usage dashboard.
Included usage and any additional charge are distinguishable.
Compare a complete change, not one impressive response
Prepare a small issue with a failing example, expected behaviour and an acceptance check. Give both tools the same repository state and access to the same documentation. Review every changed file, the commands executed and the result of the chosen checks.
Keep the model, tool version and actual account with the result. A polished explanation does not establish that the implementation behaves correctly, and a passing generated test can still miss your requirement.
Choose the authentication route before calculating cost
Claude subscription usage and API or provider billing are different routes. Gemini CLI also exposes several authentication arrangements whose quotas and paid conditions differ. Record the actual route instead of comparing a subscription with a hypothetical free allowance.
A practical pilot should count accepted changes, reviewer time and usage consumed. Set a written spend boundary for any connected paid account, then decide whether the workflow fits before scaling it.
Questions before you choose
Is Gemini CLI free because it is open source?
The client is open source, while model access follows the chosen authentication and account terms. Limited free routes and paid routes have different conditions.
Does a free Claude chat account include unlimited Claude Code?
No. Check the eligible subscription, API or supported provider route and its current allowance.
Which tool produces better code?
This page reports no quality benchmark. Evaluate the same requirement, reviewed diff and acceptance checks under the account and model you would use.

Turn the comparison into your own evaluation
Use the same criteria and priorities for both products, keep unknowns unassessed and record the plan and evidence behind your ratings.

Use the date, billing cycle, units and limits with each example. Check current account terms before purchasing. Unverified prices and model costs stay unpriced.
