ChatGPT vs Claude:
writing, Projects and business buying decisions.
Compare ChatGPT and Claude around the work, account and plan you would actually keep.
Start with the task.
Then check the account.
Shortlist ChatGPT for varied assistant work and Claude for document-led writing and iterative outputs. Use the same brief and revision request in each. Compare the retained account, required research tools and administration rather than treating a model label or a single fluent answer as a buying decision.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Working style | Mixed conversational tasks | Document work, Projects and Artifacts |
| Organising context | Projects | Projects with reference material and instructions |
| Research access | Check the available search tool | Research requires an eligible paid plan |
| Reusable outputs | File work | Artifacts alongside a conversation |
| Free access | Free tier | Free tier with limited usage and up to five Projects |
| Team purchase | Managed workspace options | Team and Enterprise options |
| API budget | API-key usage separately priced | Some Max and Team offers include specified API credits; check allowance and overage |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Buying brief | Evidence to retain | Decision boundary |
|---|---|---|
| A policy editor revises a long brief | Can the revision preserve the agreed facts? | Compare missing facts, unsupported additions and the effort required for a second revision. |
| An analyst returns to the same project weekly | What context must be available next time? | Repeat one question after a new session; do not assume storage guarantees recall of every detail. |
| A buyer needs current market research | Which research workflow survives the trial? | A research report is useful only when the cited material supports its decision-relevant claims. |
| A manager equips a small department | What is being purchased for each employee? | Record seat usage, API allowances, overage and offboarding separately; neither chat access nor a credit bundle proves every service is included. |
A policy editor revises a long brief
Can the revision preserve the agreed facts?
ChatGPT: Give the assistant a non-confidential source document and five facts it must retain.
Claude: Use the same document, instructions and requested length; inspect the revised output or Artifact.
Compare missing facts, unsupported additions and the effort required for a second revision.
An analyst returns to the same project weekly
What context must be available next time?
ChatGPT: Create a small project with an original brief, glossary and one reference file.
Claude: Create the equivalent Project and inspect which reference material is available.
Repeat one question after a new session; do not assume storage guarantees recall of every detail.
A buyer needs current market research
Which research workflow survives the trial?
ChatGPT: Check the search tool in the selected account and open each important cited page.
Claude: Check Research eligibility on the plan the buyer would retain, then review the report.
A research report is useful only when the cited material supports its decision-relevant claims.
A manager equips a small department
What is being purchased for each employee?
ChatGPT: Request the exact workspace edition, seat commitment and controls.
Claude: Request the equivalent Team or Enterprise scope, including any stated credits.
Record seat usage, API allowances, overage and offboarding separately; neither chat access nor a credit bundle proves every service is included.
Compare revision quality before style
Ask for a short document with a defined audience and five required facts. Supply the same source material to each assistant and request a controlled revision, such as reducing the length by one third while keeping the factual conditions.
Keep both drafts and mark every correction. The useful measure is whether the final document meets the brief with an acceptable review effort. This comparison does not claim that either product has been benchmarked as the more accurate writer.
Projects do not settle the business purchase
Reference material can make repeated work easier, but a project feature is not a complete procurement answer. List the owner, collaborators, sensitive inputs and required deletion or handover process before choosing an account.
Ask for the commercial offer that applies to the team. Keep included API credits, chat allowances and overage terms distinct, and verify the service to which each allowance applies. A broad subscription label does not define all of those boundaries.
Questions before you choose
Is Claude only for coding?
No. Claude also supports writing, document analysis, Projects and Artifacts; assess it against the work you need.
Which is better for document revisions?
Run the same brief and controlled revision in both, then compare factual preservation and repair effort. No measured writing winner is claimed here.
Does a Claude subscription always exclude API credits?
No. Current Max and Team offers advertise specified API credit allowances. Check the applicable allowance, service scope and overage instead of assuming all API usage is included.
Has SoftwareRadar benchmarked these assistants for this article?
No. The buying briefs are hypothetical acceptance tasks. Run them in the accounts and plans you would retain, and keep the outputs with your own review notes.
Turn the comparison into your own evaluation
Use the same criteria and priorities for both products, keep unknowns unassessed and record the plan and evidence behind your ratings.
