Azure Monitor vs Google Cloud Monitoring
Compare Azure Monitor and Google Cloud Monitoring for native cloud visibility, metrics and logs, resource access, alerting and the usage dimensions behind the bill.
Which monitoring approach fits?
Use Azure Monitor as a starting point for an Azure-centred estate and Google Cloud Monitoring for a Google Cloud-centred estate, then validate the actual resources and incident workflow. Both can participate in broader architectures, but native integration does not establish equivalent cross-cloud coverage. Separate metrics, log storage, application tracing and notification services before estimating cost. Included platform metrics or a free allowance do not make every observability feature free.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | Azure Monitor | Google Cloud Monitoring |
|---|---|---|
| Native context | Azure resources and the Azure Monitor ecosystem | Google Cloud resources and Cloud Monitoring ecosystem |
| Scope and identity | Define subscriptions, workspaces and resource access | Define projects, metrics scope and identity access |
| Metrics | Standard platform metrics and additional metric arrangements differ | Non-chargeable metrics and billable metric ingestion differ |
| Log evidence | Azure Monitor Logs and associated workspace choices | Cloud Logging is a related but separately scoped service |
| Application evidence | Define Application Insights and collection requirements | Define the related tracing and application telemetry services |
| Queries and alerts | Check logs, metric queries, alert rules and notification charges | Check returned time series, alerting and selected check charges |
| Cost boundary | Included metrics do not include every log, query or alert service | Allowances do not include every metric, query or synthetic service |

These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | Proposed exercise | Accept when |
|---|---|---|
| Access scope | Inspect a resource with the intended on-call identity | Required evidence is reachable without broad administrator access |
| Signal connection | Document metrics, logs and application evidence | Storage, retention and permission owners are named |
| Dashboard cost | Inventory queries, frequency and returned data | The applicable usage dimensions are included |
| Alert budget | List rules, checks, recipients and channels | Operational ownership and selected charges are explicit |
Native resource failure
Can the responder reach useful metrics for one failing resource?
Azure Monitor: Use the actual subscription and resource permissions to inspect the incident window.
Google Cloud Monitoring: Use the actual project and metrics scope to inspect the same type of failure.
Do not evaluate with an unrestricted administrator and assume the on-call role has equivalent access.
Metric to log
Can an engineer reach the relevant application evidence?
Azure Monitor: Specify the log workspace and Application Insights setup needed for the path.
Google Cloud Monitoring: Specify Cloud Logging and the related trace or application telemetry setup.
A metric dashboard does not establish that logs and traces are collected, retained or permitted.
Fleet dashboard
What does a frequently refreshed dashboard query?
Azure Monitor: Record the metric or log query, scope, frequency and applicable pricing.
Google Cloud Monitoring: Record the time series returned by queries and the applicable pricing.
Google’s monitoring read API pricing uses returned time series; do not budget every query as one identical API-call unit.
Out-of-hours incident
What must the organisation pay for and maintain to reach an owner?
Azure Monitor: Record alert rule types, evaluation, action groups and notification requirements.
Google Cloud Monitoring: Record alert policies, queries, checks and notification requirements.
Map the current applicable charges and test only an approved non-customer notification route.
Map the estate and the responder
Begin with subscriptions or projects, regions, resource types and the identity that will respond to an incident. Decide whether the engineer needs a single application view or an estate-wide view. Validate the real access arrangement rather than the experience of a full administrator.
For a multi-cloud estate, list the supported collection route and diagnostic depth for each resource. A product’s ability to receive external metrics does not establish the same native investigation experience across providers. Keep additional collectors and external data transfer in the architecture and cost inventory.
Separate every chargeable signal
Azure includes standard platform metrics, but logs, advanced metric arrangements, queries, alerts and notification services have their own boundaries. Google Cloud Monitoring similarly distinguishes non-chargeable metrics and allowances from other metric ingestion, queries, checks and alerting usage. Related logging and tracing services must be budgeted where required.
Google’s monitoring read API pricing is based on time series returned, so a frequently refreshed fleet dashboard can have a different usage pattern from a single-resource view. For both providers, model the actual dashboards, retention, alert evaluations and notification choices. Dynamic or region-specific prices should be taken from the current estimate rather than a fabricated single per-host price.
Questions before you choose
Is Azure Monitor completely free because platform metrics are included?
No. Standard platform metrics are included, while other monitoring, logging, query, alerting and notification capabilities can be metered.
Does Google Cloud Monitoring include free unlimited observability?
No. Non-chargeable metrics and allowances have defined boundaries. Other metric ingestion, queries, checks, alerting and related logging or tracing can incur charges.
Is Google Cloud Monitoring read pricing simply per API request?
Do not assume that. Current monitoring read API pricing is based on time series returned. Use the current applicable pricing and the dashboard’s actual query pattern.
