Measure sponsored software content: referrals, enquiries and qualified leads
A campaign report is more useful when it separates what was published, who arrived and which enquiries the sales team could use. Agree the measures and handover before the article goes live, while keeping attribution limits visible.

Choose the objective before the metric
Decide whether the article should explain a category, introduce a product or generate a specific kind of enquiry. Those objectives can overlap, but each needs different evidence. A report of page views alone cannot establish that sales received suitable prospects.
For a fictional accounting-software vendor, the campaign might explain multi-currency invoicing and invite relevant businesses to request a demonstration. Define what makes that request useful to the team. Keep the campaign’s practical objective separate from broad statements about awareness that cannot be evaluated with the available data.
Record publication as a deliverable
Retain the live URL, publication date, agreed article and any included distribution evidence. Check that the destination links work and the important factual details match the approved copy. This establishes that the publication work was completed.
A live page does not prove search indexing, a particular ranking or a future audience. If the scope includes a newsletter or another placement, record that separately. Compare the delivered work with the commercial agreement before evaluating later traffic or sales outcomes. This prevents a single report from confusing fulfilment with effectiveness.
Use a consistent referral path
Google Analytics campaign guidance describes parameters that identify referring campaigns. Agree the source, medium and campaign values, then test the complete URL to the intended landing page. Keep different distribution activities distinguishable.
For the accounting vendor, the landing page should continue the invoicing topic and offer an appropriate next step. Inspect the mobile page, form and confirmation. Preserve required query parameters and keep personal details out of campaign URLs. A correctly tagged link is still of limited value if the receiving form does not reach the right team.
Define the meaningful interaction
Google Analytics explains events and key events for measuring interactions and important business actions. Verify the selected event in the actual implementation before the campaign begins. A button click and a successfully accepted enquiry are different observations.
Check whether repeated clicks, validation failures or test submissions affect the count. Use a harmless approved test and identify it in the review process. Analytics collection can be incomplete because of configuration, visitor choices or other conditions; keep that limitation visible instead of treating the report as a perfect count of every person.
Separate the reporting stages
| Stage | Possible evidence | What it does not establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Publication | Live article and agreed placements | Future audience or rankings |
| Referral | Campaign-attributed visits | Buying intent |
| Enquiry | Accepted form or contact record | Qualification |
| Qualified outcome | Defined sales review disposition | Revenue |
| Commercial result | Recorded opportunity or sale where attributable | Exclusive causation by the article |
Choose a reporting period and an owner for each stage. Keep the definitions stable so a later comparison is meaningful. If the publisher and vendor use different measurement systems, explain the difference rather than forcing the totals to match.
Review enquiry quality with the receiving team
Agree qualification criteria relevant to the product, such as business need, suitable market and a genuine request for contact. Record duplicate, spam, existing-customer and unrelated submissions separately. A sender’s declared discovery source can add context but should not be treated as independently verified attribution.
For the accounting vendor, sales should record whether the enquiry concerns the supported invoicing workflow. Include response handling in the plan: an appropriate lead can still be lost if nobody follows up. Do not attribute every later opportunity to the article merely because the person once visited the page.
Use the result to improve the next brief
Compare the explanation, referral path and reviewed enquiries. A weak result may point to an unsuitable topic, an unclear landing page or a mismatch in audience. A small campaign may not provide enough evidence to distinguish those causes confidently. Record what remains uncertain.
The media-kit guide covers scope and evidence, and the distribution guide covers reuse. Propose a campaign through SoftwareRadar’s sponsored content enquiry. Start with a useful topic, a working destination and measures the team can interpret honestly.
Frequently asked questions
Are referral visits the same as leads?
No. Visits show observed traffic; enquiries and qualification require separate definitions and records.
Should a campaign be tested before publication?
Yes. Test destination links, the relevant measurement event and the enquiry handover using an approved harmless example.
Can the article be credited with every later sale?
Do not assume exclusive causation. Keep the attribution method, reporting period and known gaps explicit.
