Product variants in ecommerce: options, SKUs and platform limits

A dropdown called colour can look simple while multiplying the records, images and stock positions behind a product. Model your real combinations before comparing variant limits or commissioning a configurator.

Distinguish an option from a saleable combination

An option is a dimension of choice, such as size or finish. A value is one allowed answer, such as medium or graphite. A variant is a particular combination that the business sells. A SKU is an identifier used to distinguish a saleable or stocked item in the relevant operating system. Those ideas are related, but the labels do not make them interchangeable.

Begin with the warehouse or fulfilment reality. Does each colour and size exist as its own stocked item? Is a name engraved after purchase without creating a separate stock position? Does a custom dimension need a rule and a calculated price? The answer determines the data model more reliably than the appearance of a dropdown.

Calculate the combinations before checking the limit

Suppose a fictional jacket has five sizes, four colours and two fits. If every combination is valid, there are 5 × 4 × 2 = 40 possible variants. Adding six lining choices would raise that theoretical total to 240. It would also introduce a fourth option dimension, which can matter independently of the number of variants.

Do not generate every mathematical combination if the business does not sell all of them. If one lining is unavailable in a particular fit, the catalogue or configuration rules need to reflect that. Keep a list of valid combinations with stable identifiers, rather than discovering invalid products after customers have ordered them.

Compare current platform rules, not remembered limits

Shopify’s variant documentation, checked for this article, lists up to 2,048 variants and three options per product. It also explains that pricing, inventory and shipping settings are handled at variant level after variants are added. A remembered limit from an older implementation can produce a misleading platform comparison.

WooCommerce’s variable-product documentation describes variations built from attributes, with their own price, stock and image settings. Its customer experience also depends on the chosen theme and variation setup. Confirm the actual product model, extensions and front-end behaviour instead of assuming a higher theoretical capacity settles the buying decision.

Follow the chosen combination into the order

A good storefront makes the selected item clear before purchase, but the same identity must survive the handover. Ask how the combination appears in the order, packing workflow, connector and receiving ERP or warehouse system. An attractive colour swatch is not sufficient if the fulfilment team receives an ambiguous parent-product name.

Use a synthetic sample containing an ordinary variant, an out-of-stock combination and an unavailable combination. Check the image, price, stock message and order identifier. Then change a value and confirm the previous choice is not silently carried into the wrong item. Keep the test centred on the buyer’s task and the resulting order.

Know when the problem is configuration

A fixed set of stocked colours and sizes fits a variation model naturally. A made-to-measure product may involve dimensions, compatibility rules, accessories, calculations and outputs that do not correspond to a pre-created SKU for every possible choice. In that case, generating thousands of variants can be the wrong way to describe the product.

Separate three requirements: capturing a customer note, selecting an existing variant and validating a custom configuration. A text field can capture an engraving request, but does not establish that a complex engineered combination is valid. Read the complex configurator checklist when the required result includes rule checks or a production-ready specification.

Plan who maintains the catalogue

Variant capacity is also a maintenance commitment. Someone must keep identifiers, prices, images, stock references and discontinued combinations consistent. Ask how bulk updates are validated and how a change is checked before it reaches the live store. A large import should not be the first time the team sees the resulting product family.

Compare the Shopify and WooCommerce profiles for the broader platform responsibilities. Where custom product logic is the core requirement, the Configurix profile is a relevant starting point for a separate implementation brief. Keep custom development, model preparation and ongoing rule maintenance distinct from the storefront subscription.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an option and a variant?

An option is a choice dimension such as size. A variant is a particular saleable combination of option values, such as medium, blue and regular fit.

What Shopify variant limit was checked for this article?

The linked current documentation lists up to 2,048 variants and three options per product. Confirm the exact product model, integrations and current requirements before implementation.

Should every custom product choice become a variant?

No. A fixed saleable combination, a customer note and a rule-validated custom configuration solve different problems. Model the product and required fulfilment output first.
