Gumroad fees: direct sales vs Discover and card processing

Understand Gumroad’s USD direct-sale and Discover fees, separate card processing, and compare the effect of fixed fees on lower-price products.

In this guide
  1. Use the actual sale route
  2. Reconcile a US$20 card-sale example
  3. Check fixed fees on smaller orders
  4. Treat volume discounts and refunds separately
  5. Keep the product and acquisition budgets together

Use the actual sale route

Gumroad’s fee guide checked on 20 October 2026 describes a direct-sale platform fee of 10% plus US$0.50, with card processing separate. Discover marketplace sales use a 30% fee that includes processing.

Keep the source currency in the calculation. A UK creator charging £20 needs the actual checkout currency and conversion treatment; a US$20 illustration is not a £20 net-payout forecast. The same product can have different economics depending on where the customer finds it.

Reconcile a US$20 card-sale example

Sale valueUS$20.00US$20.00
Platform fee10% × $20 + $0.50 = $2.5030% × $20 = $6.00

The table uses the standard direct rate, not a volume discount. It models fee arithmetic, not a real payout statement or a claim about the number of customers Discover will bring.

Check fixed fees on smaller orders

A fictional creator offers a short template and a larger bundle. The fixed per-sale components consume a larger proportion of a small purchase. Build the budget using expected order values rather than multiplying revenue by the headline percentage alone.

Compare contribution after required fees and the creator’s delivery work. Do not count marketplace discovery as free acquisition or claim that direct promotion has no cost. Advertising, email work and affiliate arrangements may change the decision even where the checkout fee is lower.

Treat volume discounts and refunds separately

The fee guide describes a calendar-month direct-sale discount after the stated US$20,000 threshold, with its own reset and refund conditions. Apply it only where the account and sale meet the documented rule; it does not replace Discover’s rate.

Review the actual treatment of a partial refund and the payment-processing portion. Use the account’s sales export to reconcile charged fees before assuming every refunded order returns every cost.

Keep the product and acquisition budgets together

Retain order value, currency, route, payment method, refund assumptions and promotion costs. Recalculate for a low-price product and a bundle.

Use the Gumroad profile, Ecwid capacity guide and total-cost checklist when comparing a marketplace route with your own storefront.

Frequently asked questions

Does Gumroad’s direct-sale platform fee include card processing?

The checked fee guide lists card processing separately from the standard 10% plus US$0.50 direct-sale fee.

Is the US$20 Gumroad example a £20 UK payout?

No. Checkout currency, tax, payment route and any conversion must be established before calculating a GBP payout.
