VIDEO EDITING / MOTION DESIGN

Premiere vs After Effects:
choose the job, then the app.

Compare editing and finishing with motion graphics and compositing. Follow a 30-second video brief, compatible Dynamic Link handover and current UK individual licence references.

START WITH YOUR BUYING BRIEF

Edit the story.
Build the effect where it is needed.

Start with Premiere for assembling and finishing an edited video, including audio, colour and straightforward titles. Evaluate After Effects for custom animated graphics and composited shots. The tools overlap and can work together; a basic title alone does not establish a need for another app. Name the required deliverable and editable handover before choosing one or both.

A 30-second edited product video

Can the editor complete the whole story with basic titles?

Adobe Premiere: Assemble four primary segments, balance audio and inspect the closing title and export.

Adobe After Effects: Add an effects composition only if the shot requirement exceeds the chosen editing workflow.

The proposed primary intervals total 30 seconds. No footage or completed export is supplied.

A five-second tracked callout

Does the brief need custom motion and compositing?

Adobe Premiere: Keep the surrounding edit and evaluate whether its own graphics tools already meet the requirement.

Adobe After Effects: Evaluate the custom tracked callout and its editable source inside the defined five-second interval.

M01 occupies 13–18 seconds within E03, which occupies 11–21. Overlay time is not added to the final duration.

A linked project handed to another editor

Can the recipient open, revise and deliver it?

Adobe Premiere: Check the linked composition, major version, media and actual final timeline/export.

Adobe After Effects: Check the source composition, fonts, plug-ins, media, major version and colour settings.

A preview that opens is only one check; dependencies, a requested revision and a destination export remain unperformed.

One person choosing retained app access

What licence arrangement matches the actual work?

Adobe Premiere: Reference £21.98/month including VAT, annual billed monthly; twelve unchanged paid months £263.76.

Adobe After Effects: Reference £21.98/month including VAT, annual billed monthly; twelve unchanged paid months £263.76.

Two such single-app references total £43.96/month and £527.52 over twelve paid months. This is not a bundle quote or a lowest-price recommendation.

A five-second effect can sit inside a 30-second edit

The proposed primary edit has E01 opening logo/title from 0–3 seconds, E02 product footage from 3–11, E03 screen recording from 11–21 and E04 closing offer from 21–30. These four adjacent intervals total 30 seconds. They are planning seconds with exclusive end boundaries, not rendered frames or a timing benchmark.

M01 is a five-second custom tracked callout at 13–18 within E03. It overlaps the primary material rather than extending the sequence, so the proposed deliverable remains 30 seconds, not 35. Agree whether a simple Premiere graphic meets the brief or whether the custom tracked/composited element justifies the After Effects workflow. No media, tracking result, composition or export is supplied.

Treat Dynamic Link as a handover with dependencies

Adobe documents a live connection between Premiere and After Effects and requires matching major versions. A linked source can update in the edit, but a complex composition needs processing before changes appear. Confirm the actual installed versions rather than promising that every old/new pair will link.

Keep the project files, media, fonts, plug-ins and requested revision with the handover. Have the intended recipient open a representative source, make the agreed change and inspect the final export. Record unsupported or missing dependencies as gaps. These are proposed acceptance checks, not a claim that this handover has been operated.

Review colour settings in the linked workflow

Adobe’s compatibility documentation identifies cases where Premiere sequence and After Effects project settings affect the round-trip appearance. Some settings and graphics do not transfer with identical behaviour. A successful live link alone does not establish visual equivalence.

For the brief, agree the destination, sequence/project colour settings and a representative review shot. Compare the linked view and actual export on that destination. The worksheet leaves those results blank. No colour match, performance or final-file acceptance has been measured here.

Price the needed apps and the actual commitment

The reviewed UK individual single-app cards each show £21.98 per month including VAT on an annual plan billed monthly. Twelve unchanged fully paid monthly periods are £263.76 for either single app. One person taking both listed single-app references would have a £43.96 monthly base and £527.52 over twelve paid months. The three reference routes are alternatives, not costs to add together.

This arithmetic does not price a Creative Cloud bundle or establish the cheapest offer. Check existing apps and entitlements, current bundle promotions, tax, commitment and included services at checkout. Trials, discounts, price/tax changes, team offers, plug-ins, extra storage/credits, hardware and staff time are excluded. A monthly payment on an annual plan is an annual commitment; read the actual retained terms.

Keep trial access separate from the retained workflow

The reviewed individual desktop trials last seven days, begin at checkout and convert to paid membership unless cancelled before they end. Record the actual offer and deadline. Time-limited access is different from a permanent free desktop plan. This comparison’s app/workflow references concern desktop work; Premiere mobile access has separate scope.

Use the same agreed deliverable and acceptance checks in an authorised evaluation. Keep actual app versions, playback observations, linked revisions, exports and final plan decisions with the evidence. All such result fields in the supplied worksheet are blank; this research did not start a trial, enter payment information, install or operate either app.

Questions before you choose

Are Premiere Pro and After Effects the same program?

No. Premiere focuses on assembling and finishing an edited video, while After Effects focuses on custom motion graphics, animation and compositing. They overlap and can work together. Choose the workflow and editable deliverable rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Do I need After Effects for basic titles in Premiere?

Premiere has title and graphics tools. Evaluate those against the actual brief before adding another application. After Effects is a candidate when custom motion, tracking or compositing requirements justify its workflow; every basic title does not require it.

How much do Premiere and After Effects cost in the UK?

Each reviewed UK individual single-app reference is £21.98/month including VAT, annual billed monthly. Twelve unchanged fully paid months are £263.76 per app. Both single-app references total £43.96/month and £527.52 over twelve paid months, excluding trials, promotions, price changes, team offers and extras. This is not a bundle quote.

Does Dynamic Link work with different major versions?

Adobe requires matching major versions of Premiere and After Effects for Dynamic Link. Check the actual versions, media and composition dependencies, then evaluate the receiving editor and export. Linked updates can require processing before they appear.

Are After Effects and Premiere permanently free on desktop?

The reviewed individual desktop offers are seven-day trials that start at checkout and convert to paid membership unless cancelled. They are not permanent free desktop licences. Record the actual offer, deadline and retained plan; mobile access has separate scope.

Does a five-second After Effects composition make the 30-second Premiere example 35 seconds?

No. The example’s five-second M01 element occupies 13–18 inside the primary E03 segment at 11–21. It overlaps existing timeline time, so the four primary segments still define a 30-second proposed edit. No completed composition, tracking result or export is supplied.
