Is OpenCart free? Hosting, extensions and operating costs explained
Separate OpenCart’s free software from hosting, extensions, payment processing and maintenance. Build a realistic small-store operating budget.
In this guide
Free software does not assign the operating work
OpenCart’s feature page describes the software as free to download and use without a monthly core fee. It also describes extensions, store administration and backup-related functions.
A store still needs somewhere to run, a payment route and people responsible for changes and recovery. Treat the free-core statement as one budget line rather than a promise that operating the whole shop costs nothing.
Build the recurring and project ledger
| Line | Commercial input | Owner to name |
|---|---|---|
| Core software | No core subscription fee described | Store owner |
| Hosting and domain | Recurring service and renewal | Operator |
| Extensions and theme | Licence, renewal and compatibility | Implementer |
| Payments | Provider rate and applicable adjustments | Finance owner |
| Maintenance and recovery | Support scope and restore work | Technical owner |
Record whether each extension is one-off, renewable or tied to a service subscription. A free core does not make every marketplace component free.
Use an explicitly fictional budget
Imagine a store assuming £25/month for hosting, £120/year for required extensions and £600/year for agreed maintenance. Those invented planning inputs total £300 + £120 + £600 = £1,020 a year before the domain, processing, taxes and setup.
These are not OpenCart supplier prices or a market average. Replace every input with an applicable quote. Keep internal staff time separate from cash paid to suppliers so the calculation does not disguise unpaid operating work.
Test the complete order and restore route
Use a synthetic product, order and refund in an authorised test environment. Confirm that the required payment extension and fulfilment handover work on the intended OpenCart version. A marketplace listing is not a guarantee of compatibility with the store’s other extensions.
Ask who saves recoverable copies, who restores them and how the restored store is accepted. Review updates with the same owner. A backup button does not establish the retention, off-site copy or recovery time the business needs.
Compare a managed alternative on equal responsibilities
If comparing OpenCart with a hosted platform, identify which operating tasks the hosted service takes over and which remain with the merchant. Keep custom work and payment processing in both proposals.
Use the OpenCart profile, Ecwid capacity guide and WooCommerce running-cost guide. Choose around the retained service and the team able to operate it.
Frequently asked questions
Does OpenCart charge a monthly core-software fee?
Its checked feature page describes free download and use without a monthly core fee. Hosting and other operating services are separate.
Is the £1,020 OpenCart example an actual supplier quote?
No. It uses explicitly fictional hosting, extension and maintenance inputs to demonstrate the budget calculation.
