CLIPCHAMP EXPORT

Clipchamp asks for an upgrade? Free export and premium checks

Clipchamp’s personal free plan exports up to 1080p. Premium assets or features can still trigger an upgrade prompt; work plans have separate rules.

Why is Clipchamp asking me to upgrade?

For a personal free account, check the selected resolution and every premium asset or feature in the project. Free personal exports can be watermark-free at up to 1080p. Premium stock or another paid feature can still require an upgrade at 1080p. A work or school account has a separate licence and feature table.

Start with the exact message. An invitation to change plan is different from an export that freezes or fails. Keep the account, project and requested output together while you investigate; two different account types can otherwise make the same resolution look like a different offer.

Identify the account and access you are using

Microsoft separates personal accounts from work or school access. If you expect personal subscription features, check that the signed-in personal account holds the relevant Microsoft 365 entitlement. Having a subscription under another account does not identify the rights in the current session.

For a managed account, Microsoft’s work-account guidance requires an assigned licence including Clipchamp and an enabled service. Ask the administrator to check that specific account if access is missing. Do not assume a company email address or another employee’s access establishes your entitlement.

Check the export setting and the project separately

The export-format guidance places 480p, 720p and 1080p in the personal free tier. Personal 4K output needs the appropriate paid access. Write down the resolution selected for this attempt.

Then inspect the project. Microsoft’s export instructions describe diamond-shaped indicators beside export options when a free-plan project uses a premium feature. If you want to continue without that feature, remove or replace the premium requirement and check the project again.

Lowering the resolution is only one change. A project containing premium music can still have that requirement after a 4K-to-1080p switch. Keep a copy of the intended creative brief so a replacement track or visual can be checked against the required result.

Which project element might be the reason?

Separate the proposed output from the selected project features
Item to inspectPersonal free-account questionWhat to record
ResolutionIs the selected output within the free tier?Requested resolution and actual export setting
Stock video, music or imagesDoes the selected item belong to the free collection or require premium access?Item name and the requirement shown in this project
Brand kit or another featureDoes the selected feature need an entitlement the account lacks?Feature name and applicable plan entry
Template or inherited project elementsWhich included elements carry their own requirements? The specific elements needing review, rather than only the template name

Use the current account-and-plan feature comparison for the actual feature. Its personal Microsoft 365 column and standalone premium column are not identical in every row. A general “premium” label is insufficient to decide which purchase, if any, covers the requirement.

Do work accounts also need premium access for 4K?

The reviewed work/school export guidance lists 4K among the resolutions in both Standard and Premium work plans. The personal free-plan restriction should not be applied to a Standard work account as a universal 4K rule.

Keep the resolution question separate from access to other features. The organisation must still assign a suitable licence and enable Clipchamp. Record any remaining feature requirement shown by the actual project and take that detail to the person managing the account.

Use four short project briefs to isolate the requirement

Fictional proposed Clipchamp reviews; no editor or export result has been tested
BriefProposed projectRequirement to investigateNext check
Personal project AOwn clips, own audio and basic text; 1080pNo premium requirement identified in this proposed briefConfirm the actual project contains only included assets and features.
Personal project BSame brief plus premium stock music; 1080pThe stock asset still needs an appropriate entitlementReplace or remove the premium item, or verify the required paid access.
Personal project COwn clips plus brand kit use; 4KResolution and the selected feature need separate reviewChoosing 1080p does not by itself remove another premium feature.
Work project DAssigned Standard work account; 4K requestedUse work-plan rules, rather than the personal free-plan ruleConfirm assigned access and the actual selected features with the organisation.

These are independent briefs, not stages of one tested video. Project A does not prove that an actual account will export successfully. Project B shows why a lower resolution alone cannot settle an asset requirement. Project C keeps two possible requirements visible. Project D prevents a personal-account rule being applied to a work-plan decision.

For your evaluation, use a non-sensitive short project with media you are authorised to use. Change one identified requirement at a time and record the resulting message. Keep observations blank until checked in the actual account.

If you already have a subscription, check the exact entitlement

Microsoft’s product-and-cost overview explains that personal subscription features need the relevant signed-in Microsoft account. Compare the specific requirement with the selected offer rather than purchasing another subscription immediately.

For a company account, ask for the assigned licence and service state to be checked. Include the project’s exact message, requested resolution and named feature. A price page for a personal account and a work-account administration decision answer different questions.

Keep the finished video and editing project distinct

The normal finished video export is an MP4. In the work version, Microsoft describes the .clipchamp project and its Assets and Exports folders in OneDrive or SharePoint. A finished viewing copy and the materials needed to continue editing serve different purposes.

Check the exported file’s picture, audio and text before sharing it. Retain the working project and source assets according to the team’s normal arrangements. This guide does not claim that an export completed, an asset licence was granted or a file handover was tested.

If the export is stuck rather than asking for an upgrade

A frozen progress bar or failed export needs a different investigation. Use Microsoft’s export troubleshooting page for that symptom. Record the browser or app, selected resolution, point of failure and exact message so the next person can distinguish a processing problem from an access requirement.

Download the project and export checklist ↓

The checklist has blank fields for the account type, selected items, displayed requirement, approved change and observed result. Keep passwords and private project contents out of a support brief.

Where should you go next?

Use the Clipchamp profile for the broader editing and plan decision. Browse creative software if the recording, editing or output requirement needs a different application.

For a larger purchase, use the software cost guide to include retained app rights and implementation work. An upgrade prompt should be investigated against the actual project, rather than treated as proof that every video requires payment.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Clipchamp export not free at 1080p?

A personal free project can still contain premium stock or another premium feature. Check those requirements separately from resolution; 1080p alone does not establish that every selected item is included.

Can free Clipchamp export without a watermark?

The personal free plan offers watermark-free exports up to 1080p when the project uses included features and assets. Check the selected project requirements before exporting.

Does switching to 1080p make premium music free in Clipchamp?

No. The project may still contain a premium asset or feature. Inspect and address each requirement separately.

How does Clipchamp indicate a premium feature during export?

Microsoft’s export instructions describe diamond-shaped indicators beside export options when a free-plan project uses a premium feature. Check the actual item and plan requirement.

Why does Clipchamp ask me for an upgrade when I already have Microsoft 365?

Check the signed-in account, its actual entitlement and the specific feature. Personal Microsoft 365 access, standalone premium and work or school licensing have different arrangements.

Does Clipchamp Standard for work support 4K export?

The reviewed work/school export-format guidance lists 4K in both Standard and Premium. Confirm the assigned account and other project-feature requirements separately.

Is an exported MP4 the same as the editable Clipchamp project?

No. MP4 is the finished video. Keep the working project and required source assets when further editing is needed; work projects use a separate .clipchamp file and asset folders.

Does a stuck Clipchamp export mean I need to pay?

A stalled or failed export is not itself proof of a paid-feature requirement. Record the exact message and use Microsoft’s export troubleshooting guidance for that symptom.
