PRESENTATION SOFTWARE

PowerPoint vs Google Slides:
create together. Deliver with confidence.

Compare browser review, desktop design requirements, offline preparation and the final presenting device. Use the same six-slide rehearsal brief before choosing.

Work back to the editing tool.

Shortlist Google Slides for collaborative browser drafting when contributors can use the agreed account and file format. Shortlist desktop PowerPoint when the deck requires PowerPoint slide-master editing or another verified desktop feature. PowerPoint for the web is also a free browser option, with its own feature limits. Rehearse the final deck in the actual presenting application before treating a file handover as complete.

Four worked buying briefs

These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.

Four contributors review one deck

Can the team update and approve a single master?

Microsoft PowerPoint: Evaluate shared PowerPoint editing and the required application rights.

Google Slides: Evaluate shared Slides editing with named owners and reviewers.

Use fictional content and record who controls the final presentation copy.

A client supplies a strict PowerPoint template

Does the design need changes to the slide master?

Microsoft PowerPoint: Use the required desktop application if master editing is essential.

Google Slides: Evaluate the theme and layout work needed, then return the agreed file for acceptance.

A matching screenshot does not establish editability or compliance with a template workflow.

The presenter travels to an uncertain connection

Can the actual deck be delivered on that computer?

Microsoft PowerPoint: Check the installed application, local files, required fonts and media.

Google Slides: Prepare supported-browser offline files or agree a separate exported delivery route.

Rehearse with the delivery device during an authorised evaluation. An online preview alone is insufficient evidence.

The final presenter uses another application

What does the recipient need to edit or play?

Microsoft PowerPoint: Identify the PowerPoint version, operating system and required presenting features.

Google Slides: Check the exported PPTX in that environment and retain the agreed master.

Inspect layout, notes, transitions and media; a PDF reference does not verify live slideshow behaviour.

A six-slide brief covers creation and delivery

Use a fictional six-slide project update: title, agenda, a project-hours chart, a decision, a slide reserved for an agreed media requirement, and next steps. Add speaker notes to the decision and final slide. The brief describes an evaluation to perform; it does not report a passed slide conversion or playback test.

For the chart, use four fictional actual-hour values: Research 10, Build 23, Review 11 and Handover 12, totalling 56. Ask the receiving editor to verify both the displayed values and whether the chart remains editable in the required way. A fixed image of the chart and an editable chart are different deliverables.

Keep the original input, shared master, returned editable deck and approved delivery file under distinct names. Reopen the returned deck in the application the presenter will use. Inspect line wrapping, notes, charts and media, and record the application/platform alongside any accepted differences.

Compare the required design action, not just a product name

Microsoft’s current platform table lists slide-master editing for PC and Mac PowerPoint and marks it unsupported in PowerPoint for the web. It also lists real-time co-authoring and comments across supported platforms. Free web collaboration and desktop template design should therefore be assessed as separate requirements.

Google Slides offers live editing, comments and sharing controls. Some organisation templates and other premium capabilities depend on the Workspace plan. Confirm the exact design and review actions that contributors need; do not assume every paid feature is included in a personal account.

When a client requires an editable PowerPoint template, name the acceptance owner and application before drafting. Agree how design changes are approved and who retains the final master. If the required action is unavailable in the proposed editor, include the alternative workflow and its cost in the decision.

Rehearse the presenting setup before an event

Google’s computer offline route requires Chrome or Edge, a normal profile, the offline extension and advance file preparation. Check the deck’s readiness while connected. The computer instructions should not be treated as setup instructions for a mobile app.

For a PowerPoint delivery, identify the actual installed or browser application and the licence needed for the chosen features. Use the presenting device to check the required fonts, media, notes and output. Keep a fixed reference copy if useful, while recognising that a PDF cannot validate interactive playback.

Budget for the retained app rights, any paid organisational or AI capabilities, template changes and rehearsal time. Existing suitable subscriptions may reduce the incremental purchase. Make the decision from the accepted delivery workflow rather than a generic claim that one editor always produces better slides.

Questions before you choose

Is Google Slides better than free PowerPoint?

Compare Slides with PowerPoint for the web for browser collaboration. Assess desktop PowerPoint separately when the deck requires desktop features. Choose around the final presenter, file and design workflow.

Can PowerPoint for the web edit the slide master?

Microsoft’s platform comparison marks slide-master editing as unsupported in PowerPoint for the web and supported in PC and Mac PowerPoint.

Can Google Slides edit a PowerPoint file without converting it?

Yes. Google documents direct Office-file editing in Slides. Converting creates a separate Google copy. Check the final file in the receiving application.

Can Google Slides work offline on a computer?

Yes, with advance setup in Chrome or Edge, a normal browser profile, the Google Docs Offline extension and the required deck ready on the device.

Will a PowerPoint deck look and play identically in Google Slides?

Identical layout and playback should not be assumed. Rehearse the actual deck, fonts, charts, notes, transitions and media in the final presenting application.

Do I need a paid subscription to create presentations?

Both PowerPoint for the web and core Google Slides provide free starting points. Desktop PowerPoint and some organisational, premium or AI features have separate rights and costs.
