01 / Overview

What is Xcode?

Xcode is Apple’s development environment for building, testing, debugging and distributing apps for Apple platforms. The Mac application is free; account capabilities, device provisioning and app distribution have separate conditions.

Who is Xcode for?

Developers creating and maintaining apps for Apple devices with a compatible Mac and a defined testing and distribution plan.

Build and debug Apple-platform apps on a compatible Mac

Xcode combines editing, builds, testing, simulators, debugging and profiling for Apple-platform apps. Apple’s UK Mac App Store listing identifies the application as free. This is the IDE download, rather than a promise that every distribution or optional cloud capability is included.

Use Apple’s Xcode requirements table to match the specific release with macOS, SDKs and supported deployment targets. The Mac operating system needed to run Xcode and the operating system your app targets are different decisions.

Free access & evaluation

Apple lists Xcode as a free Mac application. Free Apple Account device testing is limited; distribution membership and optional service usage are separate.

04 / Buying checklist

Before you choose Xcode

  • The Xcode application runs on supported macOS versions rather than Windows or Linux.

  • Free Personal Team device provisioning expires and requires renewal by rebuilding and reinstalling.

  • App Store submission requires Apple Developer Program membership.

Separate personal-device testing from distribution

Apple’s account guidance allows a free Personal Team to test on devices with limits. It lists 10 App IDs, three devices and three installed apps per device, with seven-day expiry rules. Expiring provisioning requires rebuilding and reinstalling the app; it is not an unrestricted deployment arrangement.

For App Store submission, plan the appropriate Apple Developer Program membership and team roles. Assess optional services separately from the IDE. If your primary target is Android, see Android Studio; if you are assessing a cross-platform application toolkit, see Qt Creator and define the target, framework and build environment together.

Xcode FAQs

Is Xcode free?

Yes. Apple lists the Mac application as free. Apple Developer Program membership, optional cloud usage and separately contracted services have their own scope.

Can I run Xcode on Windows or Linux?

The Xcode application is a Mac app. Check the supported macOS version for the exact Xcode release in Apple’s system requirements.

Why does my free Xcode Personal Team app expire after 7 days?

Free Personal Team provisioning profiles expire seven days after issuance. Apple says you need to rebuild and reinstall the app on the device after expiry.

How many apps can I install with a free Xcode Personal Team?

Apple’s reviewed guidance permits up to three apps per device, with up to three registered devices and 10 App IDs. The published seven-day expiry conditions also apply.

Can a free Xcode download publish an app to the App Store?

Downloading the IDE is not sufficient for submission. Apple requires Apple Developer Program membership to submit apps to the App Store.
