01 / Overview

What is Supabase?

Supabase is a Postgres-based development platform with database, authentication, storage and other backend services. Hosted projects, organisation plans and individual usage items have different limits and billing responsibilities.

Who is Supabase for?

Application teams choosing a Postgres-based backend and defining the database, users, storage and operating requirements together.

Define the database and the rest of the backend together

Supabase combines a Postgres database with other application-backend services. That is a broader decision than choosing the database engine alone. Identify which responsibilities the application needs from the managed platform and which remain in its own code.

For a shortlist, describe one data write, one authorised read and one file-upload requirement. Compare Firebase around the same outcome while recognising the difference in data models. Review PostgreSQL separately for the underlying database, or MongoDB Atlas for a managed document-database approach.

Plan availability

Hosted Free plan with project limits

Compare the organisation plan, project compute and usage items. Review any spending-cap exclusions and required add-ons; a base plan or compute credit is not the full cost of every project arrangement.

Free access & evaluation

The reviewed hosted Free offer allows two active projects, with inactive projects paused after one week. The database-size and file-storage allowances are separate.

04 / Buying checklist

Before you choose Supabase

  • The hosted Free plan has an active-project allowance and inactivity pausing.

  • Database size and file storage are separate capacity measures.

  • The Spend Cap does not cover every billed item, including compute.

Separate organisation, project and usage costs

The billing FAQ distinguishes the organisation plan from projects and notes how Owner and Admin project allowances interact. The Free offer also has separate database and file-storage limits, plus inactivity pausing. Identify whether the intended workload fits those conditions.

The cost-control guide identifies the Pro-plan Spend Cap and its exclusions, including compute. Keep the organisation subscription, project resources and optional services in the estimate. An included credit or capped usage item should not be treated as an automatic cap on the entire invoice.

Supabase FAQs

How many active Free projects can I have on Supabase?

The reviewed allowance is two active free projects. Owner and Admin membership quotas interact across organisations, so adding another organisation is not a guarantee of another independent allowance.

Why does Supabase pause an inactive Free project?

The reviewed Free offer pauses projects after one week of inactivity. Account for that policy when choosing a hosted plan.

Is Supabase database size the same as file storage?

No. The reviewed Free offer lists 500 MB of database size and 1 GB of file storage as separate allowances. One should not be treated as the other.

Does the Supabase Spend Cap include compute charges?

No. The reviewed Pro-plan Spend Cap excludes compute and other explicitly provisioned items. Check its covered usage categories rather than treating it as a cap on the whole bill.

Does a paused Supabase project continue using billable compute hours?

The billing FAQ says compute hours count active instances, and paused projects do not incur compute usage charges. Other organisation or service charges have their own scope.
