Stripe vs Adyen
Compare Stripe and Adyen for checkout integration, selling channels, payment-method scope, order confirmation, reconciliation and the commercial proposal.
Which workflow fits your team?
Consider Stripe when its Checkout, Elements or Payment Links route matches the integration and required surrounding services. Consider Adyen when its online interfaces and connected payment operation match the merchant’s channel and market requirements. Specify the same order lifecycle and transaction mix before comparing: neither a familiar checkout button nor a single processing rate explains the whole implementation.
Seven differences that change the shortlist
| Buying question | Stripe | Adyen |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout routes | Hosted or embedded Checkout, Elements and Payment Links | Prebuilt, component and API-based online integrations |
| Online scope | Payments with market- and method-specific availability | Online payments with market- and method-specific availability |
| In-person scope | Terminal is a named additional product scope | Scope the in-person integration and required devices |
| Recurring commerce | Billing and subscription requirements need an explicit product check | Confirm tokenisation, recurring payment and subscription-system responsibilities |
| Operational brief | Connect confirmation, refunds and reporting to orders | Connect equivalent payment events and reporting to orders |
| Commercial model | Standard published transaction pricing or custom arrangement | Processing and method costs, including interchange++ where applicable |
| Minimum and extras | Check extra products and the complete contract | Minimum invoice can depend on industry or business model |
Four worked buying briefs
These are hypothetical scenarios with explicit assumptions. They do not establish equal capabilities, measured usability or a negotiated price.
| Requirement | Proposed exercise | Accept when |
|---|---|---|
| Order confirmation | Can a successful test payment update exactly the intended order? | One order reference reconciles to the intended confirmed test payment. |
| Interrupted checkout | What happens if the customer closes the browser before returning? | The order state follows the documented payment outcome rather than only a return-page visit. |
| Refund handover | Can an authorised operator identify and simulate a refund? | The simulated refund, payment and order references can be reconciled. |
| Complete quote | Does the proposal cover the real channels and transaction mix? | Every required component has a price or an explicitly unresolved quote item. |
Order confirmation
Can a successful test payment update exactly the intended order?
Stripe: Use the selected Stripe integration and its documented confirmation path.
Adyen: Use the selected Adyen integration and its documented confirmation path.
One order reference reconciles to the intended confirmed test payment.
Interrupted checkout
What happens if the customer closes the browser before returning?
Stripe: Exercise the interruption using Stripe test mode and sample orders.
Adyen: Exercise the equivalent interruption in the Adyen test environment.
The order state follows the documented payment outcome rather than only a return-page visit.
Refund handover
Can an authorised operator identify and simulate a refund?
Stripe: Use test data and the intended operator role.
Adyen: Use equivalent test data and the intended operator role.
The simulated refund, payment and order references can be reconciled.
Complete quote
Does the proposal cover the real channels and transaction mix?
Stripe: List payment methods, merchant market, extra products and operating work.
Adyen: List equivalent methods, market, minimums and operating work.
Every required component has a price or an explicitly unresolved quote item.
Choose the integration before estimating delivery
A hosted page, an embedded form and custom components can place different work in the merchant’s application. Specify the required checkout experience, the supported platform and who maintains the integration before deciding how much development is needed.
Stripe advertises several named routes; Adyen documents prebuilt and API-based choices. Match the retained integration to your order system and operational requirements. A product portfolio does not establish that every route, country or surrounding service is available under one package.
Keep the order and payment lifecycle together
Write the desired behaviour for successful, failed and interrupted payments, then explain how the order system obtains the final outcome. Use the provider’s current integration documentation to define the confirmation path and any server events. A browser returning to a page should not be the whole acceptance brief.
Separate transaction-processing charges from any recurring-billing, in-person, platform or other product requirement. Adyen’s pricing FAQ identifies a possible minimum invoice; Stripe publishes standard and custom arrangements. This page reports no measured approval, conversion or total-cost advantage.
Questions before you choose
Does Stripe Payments include all Stripe products?
No. Billing, Terminal, Connect, Tax and other services have their own product and commercial scope. Confirm the components required by the implementation.
Does Adyen always have no minimum cost?
Its pricing FAQ identifies a minimum invoice depending on the industry or business model. Ask for the actual merchant-specific proposal.
Which provider has the best approval rate?
This comparison contains no measured approval-rate benchmark. Evaluate the proposed integration and relevant transaction mix in an appropriately scoped assessment.
